I used the factory tupperware stocks that I milled a slot the length of the fore end and epoxied a piece of aluminum arrow in to stiffen them. The arrow and epoxy extend under the recoil lug and close to the front action screw, I tried a carbon arrow on one several years ago and it still had plenty of flex. With the aluminum arrow these are pretty stiff.

Both are hunting rifles and the factory stock helps keep the weight down.

Not to hijack the thread, but do you have photos of how you placed the arrows? Might be my next project.

I can't run them much over 3300 in my 1&7 twist barrel because they will blow up

3200 should be plenty. I like that idea. From my understanding a 22 Creedmoor and a 22-250 AI are pretty dang close in dimensions so it would just depend what I wanted. I was thinking, as I do with most of my rifles/cartridges that I wanted to stay at 3k or more FPS. That usually the goal I shoot for.

I turned my savage 12fv into a 22 creedmoor and stuck it in a chassis. Placed 2nd and tied for 1st in a couple 600 yard matches. Lost the tie breaker by about 1/4 inch from the center x. Real easy to load for. No real problems with the action really. Maybe a little stiff but really good accuracy. Was supposed to kill coyotes but finished it too late for the season but definitely this year. Shot against some pretty expensive setups this last match.

So, not sure if this should go in gunsmithing or not, I think this is a good place for it.

I have a Savage short action that I got cheap, it's a newer round receiver with AccuTrigger(which will get replaced). This action has a .308 bolt face.

I'm not sure what to turn it into, it's not suited for a light rifle build, I'll do that later on a Ti action, so I'm thinking a heavier target/match/varmint type of rig. I was originally thinking I'd do something like a 6XC or 6SLR. I'm open to a 6.5/264 something or other too. Lately, since I've recently acquired a 6.5 Creedmoor I was thinking a 22-250AI with a 1:7 or something .224 caliber with a fast twist. I'm really open to just about anything. I'm pretty sure I already know everything I want to put on this thing besides the chambering and barrel, I'd like a pre-fit for simplicity sakes. High BC and lighter weight bullets is what I want (sub ~140gr or so), I don't think I'd want to go bigger than 6.5/264.

I have been considering doing something faster too, like changing the bolt face and going with a WSM/SAUM face, maybe something like a 7mm WSM/SAUM or even the 6.5 variant. Obviously over the 140gr bullets, but if I'm not going to a magnum I'd like to stay lighter.

I just need some help deciding on where to take this thing in the direction I really want. A switch barrel 22-250AI/6XC or 243AI(or something) is an idea I had but I don't know how much I want to dump into a Savage action. The switch barrel might be something I save for a later build with a custom action.

Help me decide what to do, what chambering I should make this.

What about 22 creedmoor. Right there with the 22-250ai but you only have to neck down 6, 25 or 6.5cm brass.

I'd go with a 22 or 6 creedmoor and put it in an MDT XRS chassis.

I have built 243AI and 260AI on Savage actions and am very happy with both. High performance and no brass trimming.

"limited aftermarket stock option for savage..." Not very limited, IMO. Only Remington has more options, but Savage is a close second, as there are only a few stocks made for Remingtons that aren't also available for Savages.

Also, I highly recommend getting a bolt lift kit for your savage. Makes a huge difference when trying to stay on target while working the bolt.

What is your intended use ???? Your cartridge ideas seem to be all over the map from my perspective.

I have several Savage actions and a number of barrels ranging from 22-250 right up to 375 RUM. Easy to change the bolt face from standard to magnum. If the action is a bit rough, polish with Scotch Brite and lube. The great features of the Savage are the ease with which you can change barrels and the bolt face. I believe the Savage bolt follower that does not rotate when the bolt is closed but blocks the slots in the action makes it safer for the shooter in the event of a case failure than in other actions. There is no clear visible path between the area of the cartridge head and the shooter as there is on the Remington 700 or any other action that uses a full length Mauser extractor. An obstructed bore or grossly overcharged (wrong powder) cartridge is less likely to spray your face with brass in a Savage. Just my opinion. Put a Hogue (heavy barrel) stock with a EBCO bottom metal (plastic, but good plastic) on your Savage action and you will be pleased by the performance and low price. They shoot just as good as my Mausingfield. A varmint weight barrel always shoots good.

Nice thing about a savage is you make into whatever you want by swapping bolt heads. For a light and fast build a 22GT would be awesome for targets and varmints. I like a simple 223 with a fast twist for banging steel and positional practice. If you want a super fast light bullet run a 6 PRC or Saum.

Step on the gas hard! .22-284 all the way, and not with a crazy aggressive twist to just blow up every bullet you try. Like a swift on steroids. 53 vmax or 53 varmageddon have bc around .3. At 4300-4600 fps could be real interesting while the barrel lasts. A guy broke 5000 with a 30 Berger in this case but the bc sucks so bad it still wouldn't shoot as flat as the previous load possibility.
