Which 300?

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new rifle. I want it in a 300 for bigger animals such as elk although I will use it for deer here in Oklahoma at times.

Question is: 300WM or 300WSM

The reason I'm even considering the wsm is for the weight savings. I hope to have this come in at 8.5# or even less. That's hunting weight.

If I'm wanting to possibly shoot longer ranges, how much difference is there? Which should I go with?

If you want to shoot the big pills in 200 plus, I would go with the 300 WM. Also, there really is not that much weight savings in a short action vs a long action for what your wanting in my opinion.

.300wm is on every ammo shelf in the country. Shouldn't be too hard to find one that weighs 8.5-9lbs dresses to kill. My x bolt hells canyon long range is 10lbs with scope, full mag and 5 extra rounds on the stock.

Considered the x-bolts. But the weight is that Lr is why they're out.

The WSM cannot reach it's full potential in a short action unless you wanna shoot it as a single shot.

Did you check out the speed version?

Not sure what your budget is but CA ridgelines might be light enough

Another vote for the 300wm.... In my opinion just the best all do everything fairly well rifle caliber

WSM is very efficient on shorter barrels. If barrel length/ a shorter package isn't much of a concern. Go Wm. I wouldn't consider a WSM much of a long range elk slayer.... but for LR deer WSM is my choice.

300WM for sure BUT if buying a CA make sure you have the barrel twist you want in case of desire to reach out further with heavier bullets 200 gr+. 1:10 is standard but you may want as fast as 1:8 or maybe 1:9 as compromise for shooting 180's etc.

The Ridgeline is an awesome light weight rifle for the $. Even the RUM shoots like a 308. Weight savings on the WSM is negligible at best.
