I'm wanting to build a "light weight" 30 caliber magnum hunting rifle. What I mean by light weight is I'm planning on using a proof research barrel and a Manners EH4 stock. It may not end up being light weight after it's all finished but that's okay, it will be lighter than my other rifles and that's what I'm going for. I am torn between a 300 wsm with a custom long throat or a standard 300 win mag. My thought was I could loose a couple ounces with a shirt action, but after measuring COAL with bullets I'd be shooting in the wsm case it is obvious that a Remington short action will not work, even with a Wyatt's extended box mag. So that leaves me thinking a Tikka action, it would fit a COAL if 3.3 which is perfect for a long throat 300 wsm. However if it doesn't weigh less than a Remington long action then I might as well go with the long action and the 300 win mag. Do any of you guys know how much a tikka action weighs? I've never actually owned one. Also what else should be considered when building off a Tikka vs a Remington?

I don't know what your length requirements are, but the PTG 3-B Bainey box may be an option, it has an internal measurement of 3.110" OAL, longer than the Wyatts box. Just depends on your bullet choice and throating.

When I seated a 212 eldx to the neck shoulder junction I got a coal of close to 3.25" I have aspirations of shooting the 230gr A-tip out of this rifle so I'd like the mist case capacity possible.

Following.

I plan to do the same thing on a Trued 700LH in either the .300SS using the new SA chamber reamer @ 2.965", a .300 SAUM long throat, or a .300 WSM. I'm waiting on my Mag Face Bolt from PTG.

My Alpha Mags are good for 2.980".

With the Wyatts box, you can get well over 3.100".

Have you consider using the Berger 215s?
Accubond LR 210?

*PTG box Cody mentioned above.

I'll vote Tikka. I know I've weighed one before, but can't remember what it was right off hand. I can guarantee you the Tikka bolt and trigger are going to be better right fromt he start, so that will save you money right there. Add to it the smooth feeding single stack mags and you're set. The LA mags get you to about 3.36-3.4in, and can be modified for a couple thou extra if need be. I ran my 300WM out of one just fine, but only shot 165gr Sierra HP from it, so the length didn't matter much.

Yes I've considered the 215gr Berger it is one of my 5 top bullet choices. 215hyb 208 eldm 212 eldx 225 eldm 230a-tip.

I like the Sako extractor and side bolt release on the tikka but I'm not a fan of the plastic bottom "metal". The factory trigger is irrelevant it's getting replaced anyway.

Following. I have a Remington 700 300 wsm I've been thinking about rebarreling with proof, new stock (Ag carbon), and new mag box for heavies. Just wasn't sure it would work for heavier grain even with new mag box. I usually shoot 180 silver tips or 165 gr barnes tsx and vor Tx but would like to have option of the 200 gr bullets. If not I will start from scratch with new build.

Why replace one of the better factory triggers out there? Throw a sear spring in it and you've got a nice clean 1.5lb single stage that can't be bettered without spending $300 on a different trigger.

Also, several companies make drop in aluminum DBM and mountain tactical makes billet mags with slightly longer OAL capability and are made to function WSM and SAUM without mods.

Like the post states, I have never owned a Tikka so my experience is limited. I use Jewell Triggers in my rifles because I have high standards for triggers. As a result, I don't pay much attention to talk about good or bad factory triggers. I just assume the trigger is going in the waste bin anyway. If I go with a tikka I will try the spring replacement before tossing the trigger. Not replacing the trigger does have the potential to even out the price difference between the two actions. I'll check out the mountain tactical bottom metal.

fair enough, that's one thing about the triggers, There are only a couple options for the tikka. the cheap one is a timney, but no real improvement over stock. then it jumps pretty fast to bix'n'andy and krg, they're are the only ones I've seen and they're like $300
