7mm STW Reloading Thread

Looking for an RL26 load without success. Best of recent loadings in Weatherby #3 26" barrel = 162 grn ELD-X over 78.5 grn, 3.640 COAL, lit by CCI 250, gives consistent 3,220 fps, but yields unimpressive 1.75" - 2" groups at 100 yds. See some crazy fast numbers on here but doubtful more powder going to help.

I've had much nicer results with RL25 . 76gr gives me 3127 fps with 162ELX'S. Excellent accuracy

Im running RL21 for 150ABLR and H1000 for 162 AB and have been for a while. It works well so see no reason to change. Im a creature of habbit. If it aint broke Im not fixin it. Both shoot MOA at 300 respectively out of my 2 STWs with 26" barrels with 3 shot load developement. 76gr RL21 and 79gr H1000.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Grabbed the RL26 since it was new and supposedly better, faster and more stable, but haven't been able to get it to shoot for me. Going to start over with new powder and different weight bullets.

Thanks. I ordered some 150 and 175 Hornady bullets to try and will pick up a jug of H1000. Currently have some H4350 and H4831sc, but not sure if those are worth experimenting with.

Frustrating when my trusty old Rem 700 in .270 makes one ragged hole with store bought ammo and this thing is mostly just minute of deer.

Ditto to advice from brother bean, on the twenty five. That stuff set the STW on fire, with no pressures, and great es, and sd.
If that dosent work, try H1000.
Would also recommend Federal 215 primers, either GMM, or regular grade 215. Most of us here have found uniform results with those. RL25, and 215's should get you straight.

Thanks. Was talking to my smith and he strongly suggested heavier bullets and RL25. May pick up some and the Fed 215s too... And keep on trying.
What are you shooting for a rig?
Winny, remmy, or custom?
Lite barrel, heavy?
Just curious, as it all helps ehen making loading decisions, and expectations as well. The STW, is no slouch in the accuracy department. I've had some thst thought they were varmint rifles!
Yeah, they can be that accurate.
You find your load here, lots of experience here, and willing to lend a ear, and a hand as well.
Welcome aboard.

Much appreciated.

The gun is a US production Weatherby Mark V, rechambered from 7 Wby, 26" magnum contour factory barrel. I've free floated the barrel and bedded the action, modified trigger spring by cutting 1.5 coils and adjusted down to 2.5 lbs, but it's not real consistent per my gauge, before or after modification. Scope is Swarovski Z5 3.5 x 18 x 44, mounted in Leupold rings and bases.

Have only tried RL26 and 162 ELD-X so, far, ladder powder charges and stepped seating depths. Doesn't seem to like either component, so making a change.

The webbies, usually shoot pretty well, and definitely better then what you've been getting.
Once in a while, you'll get one that's a little finicky, but once you find your load, your golden.
I do know that Weatherby uses a little more freebore then others, but that's usually not a big deal.
I'm really thinking by going to the Rl25, or H1000, and 215's, you note a difference.
