7mm STW Reloading Thread

Surprised there isn't more use of the Ruger #1, in this chambering. You get a 26" bbl in a shorter format than w/ any bolt gun. Running long throated rounds is a cinch, as there is no magazine to acomodate.
I run a 160 Nosler Partition at 3300+, using H1000. It just hammers elk, but elk are not on my menu any longer.
There's just not that many of them out there. It's the strongest action ever made and if you have the right guy setting it up they can be absolute nail drivers.

Finally a new load from Your's Truly.

Two kinds of brass, Winchester Supreme and Nosler, both once fired.

.23-3 MOA, three separate 3 shot groups. I've never shot this well with anything before.

Peregrine 161gr VLR4
Winchester Magnum Primer
Alliant Reloder 23 75.6gr
This was actually the first time I've tried RL23 in the STW and it was the very first load I tried.

Quitting right here. May try RL26 when I get another shipment but as well as this load is working I went ahead and loaded the whole box of 50.

Is anyone running 195 EOL's through their STW's with good results? Please share load data?! I'm really interested in COAL as well. Trying to decide if it will be worth a new barrel and 4.0" Wyatt's

Anyone loaded any ELD-Xs yet?
I have a box of 175's that I'm going to give one last go before I rebarrel. Tried them in my 7 Mag and it was frustrating to say the least. 5 shot group would be .25 MOA or better if I didn't count the 1-2 flyers that occurred erratically in every single string I fired. Always the same result too. I could make 2 really pretty groups if I shot several strings at same target.

I'm doing load development on mine now. After 100 rounds using VV N570 I gave up and got a recipe from the fine folks at McWhorter Custom Rifles. First outing at the range yesterday yielded great results. 72.5 gr of RL25, Federal GM215M primers, Nosler brass, 3.145 CBTO which is 0.025 off the lands for me. 1/2 MOA @ 200 yds. I'll do a seating depth test this afternoon to see if I can shrink it some. (I adjusted my scope after the 72 gr group but the next three groups had no adjustment) I will most likely switch to RL26 when I can find some.

Thanks! I try to stay away from RL powders as they a temp sensitive. Where I'm at it can be anywhere from -20 to 80. Did they have any other powder suggestions?

VV N570.... Just didn't work for me here in GA (and I have about 10 lbs of it!). We have temp swings pretty regularly too (not as extreme as Iowa) which is why I want to get my hands on the RL26 since it is supposed to be more temp stable than RL25.

You might want to give some RL26 a try, you'll probably get another 100-150fps out of it and it's a much more temp stable powder. It also has their anti coppering additives in it so it makes cleanup a breeze.

Stan. This is Doc from SC. Youll love RL 25 in the STW. That's what I finally went to in the AO gun I got from you and my Collier STW. BTW Natchez has RL 26. Just bought 8lbs this week. Hope the baby is doing well.
Robby.

The more I shoot RL19, 23, and 26, the better I like them.
