Terminal performance of the 6.5mm 140 eld-match (pics)

The biggest problem you will encounter sooner are later is a shot too the shoulder bone , causing the bullet too not penetrate , or a hard angling shot that will rip the jacket causing jacket and core separation , once again no penetration . The 143 gr eldx is designed for what you are doing with more of a safety margin built in for those tough shots . I don't understand why hunters are bent on using the 147 eldm when the 143 eldx wood be a better choice as a hunting bullet.
Have you personally seen that issue?

There's a group over on Rokslide that extensively test ballistics. They take 20+ elk a year. They have had zero issues with that. Their go to combo is a .223 running a 77TMK. They have seen zero effective difference between the 147, 143, and 140 EL flavors. Other than the 147 is not quite as splashy.

I hunted the rest of the year with the 120 nosler bt. I was unable to get a kill with them. I killed my buck the one night I carried my 7mm rem mag lol. We did have another kill with the 140 eld-m on a doe after I made this thread. 155 yard shot resulted in another very dead deer.

For next season I'm going to swap to the 123 or 130 eld-m to test.

Wow thanks for all the great info, your a gentleman for sharing. Looks like they are working really well for you and your son. I love to see the young ones out in the field having the hunting heritage passed on. Keep up the good work. I have not used the eld-m's but have taken quite a few deer and antelope with the eld-x and none of them have moved more than 10'-15' from the impact point. Shots from 150 yards to 659 yards. For the naysayers, If you make a bad shot any and all bullet can and will fail.

I have just as much fun watching him do the shooting as I do myself. I'm very fortunate to have a son that wants to share my passion with me

My thoughts with the kids are to load a NP on top of the magazine just in case they are offered a 150 yard or less shot, and then have ELDX loaded under those. If the game is 150+ yards, we will have time to remove the NP cartridge and have the ELDX In the chamber. Maybe that's just over-thinking the situation. In AZ, many deer shots are 3-400+ yards. In Texas, most are under 150 yds.
The eld x out of a 6.5 Creedmoor will do just fine under 150 yards. We've killed several whitetail and mulies under 100 with the 143 eld x and none have gone anywhere and little meat damage. I wouldn't worry too much with sticking with just the 143 eld x in the Creed for all shots.

I like to tinker with handloads. I have had great luck hunting with the 143 ELD-X but my LGS got a big shipment of 140 ELD-Ms so thought I'd try them out.

This is a 140 eldm recovered from the off shoulder inside of the hide of my wife's mule deer that she shot at 240 yards. It still weighs 81 Gr. Muzzle velocity is 2880 fps. It went through the shoulder on the entrance side and still mostly stayed together. Deer was laying down and never moved. Don't have pictures of the wound. The deer pictured is my mule deer shot at 160 yards while it was walking took 5 more steps. You can see that it was a pass through just clipped the top of the heart. Exit hole is in the picture. 3 years ago we both shot mules with the same bullet and recovered the bullet inside the hide on both of them. Mine was shot at 60 yards and my wife's was shot at 600 yards. Muzzle velocity was 2908 fps. Each year we shared the rifle. On deer sized and smaller I don't think you are going to have any issues hitting bone on the way in with a 140 ELDM. They were all big body deer. My kids have shot several whitetail deer with 123 Amax that I have loaded down to 2850fps. They have done really well out to 440 yards but do go a bit farther than when shot with the 140s.
