I have a 6.5x55 factory rifle. I have a 28 SM heavy rifle. I have a 300 WSM medium heavy..

Thinking about 2 possible outcomes here….first a basic 1/2mi MAX mule deer rifle or a prairie dog rifle.

In the deer rifle, I cannot decide caliber, but know I want about 10lb with 2lb scope.

so, what caliber? 270 win 8 twist long throat, 270 Sherman 8 twist long throat, 7-08 8 twist 284 win 8 twist, 280 ai 8 twist, 300 Sherman 9 twist am I missing something?

Im probably planning 2-4 yrs out unless I just say let's do it!

Howdy, out to 880yds ( 1/2 mile ) the 270 Sherman sounds sexy for what your asking. IMO.👌🤓

Per your list, "I" would fill the .27 cal gap.

.25 - Gap
.26 - 6.5x55
.27 - Gap
.28 - 28 SM
.30 - .300 WSM
.33 -Gap
Depending on your max range, either the .270 Win or .270 Sherman will do, and other variants, i.e., AI, Gibbs, depending on what you are willing and able to do (time and money to invest). I have a .270 AI with a 30" Lilja barrel 1:8" 3G propelling the 175 Matrix VLD at 2993 FPS' 1860 FPS/1345 FT-LBS at 1000Y.

A fast twist .25 cal (.25-06/AI if you want to stay with the same bolt face) propelling the 145 Black Hole (https://blackholebullets.com/see-products) is no slouch either. I am still working on load development on my .257 WBY, but I am pushing them at 2955 FPS out of a 1:7" 22" barrel with powders I already have opened (and not necessarily ideal for it).

Good luck!

Love my 270 Sherman, it'll do the job.

How about a 7-300 PRC! It's what Hornady should have done...better all around than the 7 or the 300....would have made better use of all existing components too!

I'm with FEENIX on this one, a 270 cartridge will do it, I'd go with a 270AI with a fast twist.

I'm going to be one of those guys….<sarcasm > Did you read the post you quoted? The 28 SM is a 7-300PRC, but Sherman'ized!

I have a 270 Sherman Short… out of a 20" barrel I'm getting 3075 fps with 150 gr Accubond LRs. It's dropped every deer and elk I've shot at.

300 WSM in a lighter weight rifle built on a long action and launching 180-200s. You already have one and load for one. If you want something else, then the 7mm Rem Mag or the new 7PRC would be awesome for what you're doing in a lightish rifle. I like simple cartridges and keeping things easy for the most part though.

I second 7 rem mag. I am a 300 win mag fan tried and true but after my new one is done, I'm doing a a 7 mag next. I just have to with all the new rounds. The 7stw is really peaking my interest too! Good luck on the decision and do it sooner than later! Buy once and cry once! You'll love it!
