Kill the wolf?

Listening to the "wolf restoration biologists" on Meateater podcasts, they indicated that in some areas 30-50 domestic cows are killed YEARLY by every 100 wolves. Your tax dollars pay for those losses. Cattle kills are so prevalent, that big ranchers are also paid for missing cattle with the assumption that wolves killed them. Example: A rancher claims he had 450 head of cattle and they round them up off their winter range, but can only locate 390... you and I pay for the remainder, year in and year out. Secondly, ONE wolf, on average, kills between 16 and 20 elk per year. Figure 500-700 wolves in WY, MT, OR, ID (IIRC) this would add up to be 8000-14000 elk killed every year.
We have met AND exceeded restoration numbers long ago... and the bunny huggers keep moving the baseline. It will never be enough... and it will always be a battle settled by some liberal judge in a venue that knows no wolves except in a toystore.
Where do you get your information that cattle ranchers receive subsidies from the government for loss cattle? That has never happened and it never will.
That web site has to do with Farm Subsidies. There is a difference between Farming which Government does provide subsidies and cattle ranching which they do not. Do your home work

You quoted where I got the info! As stated, I am repeating what was said on several podcasts... by wolf reintroduction biologists. One was speaking of the Mexican wolf reintroduction in the Southwest and the other covered the wolves in Greater Yellowstone area.

I'm not talking about the wolf, I'm talking about cattle ranches subsidies. Which there are none for cattle loss.

The problem is that it doesn't really matter where they set the "acceptable" wolf numbers as in most areas there is no way to effectively control their numbers outside of arial shooting and or poisoning due to much of the area out west is too remote to travel to to run an effective trap line. Witch means anything in the back country will never have a chance of any kind of recovery from the wolf population.
There is no way EVER that "hunting" them will ever be enough to even come close to making a dent in Their numbers.
My son and I spend a ton of time in the woods every year, we have layed eyes on wolves 6 times is all and have yet to get a shot.
One of my budy's spent the last weekend of our archery season this year hunting one of our old areas up the Saint Joe River that we had given up on several years ago do to lack of Elk just to see if theres a chance that the Elk may be recovering.
After covering many miles over two days loking for sign and bugling without seeing a single Elk track nor getting a single bugle to answer him he was on his way down from the MT/ID divide road to head out and what did he finally see in a clearcut over 1000 yrds away?... a pack of 20- yes 20 wolves!.
I'm sorry, I normally try to stay out of these wolf "conversations" as yes they are all the same but you people that do not have a clue, as good a person you may be and I am sure mean well should just back off the subject!

I'd add randy selby has a real good video on YouTube under the real gunsmith where he delves into fish and game doesn't count any pack with less than 5 members but they still eat! Also these wolves are canadian strain not grey wolves. In Idaho I had bought a total of five tags. There is one organization up by pend orielle that pays 1000.00 per wolf. And fish and game didvrecently have a helicopter shoot to thin them out in more than one county.

20 wolves x 28 elk a pieceequals 560 dead elk a year. And they don't eat every one they kill unlike grizzly and cougars do

Guess what, wildlife biologists were arguing about the numbers of bears in a remote mountain, and someone heard about the newest IR film that was being used by Uncle Sams flying club....indeed it was marvelous stuff. Using our RF-4 Phantoms we flew a grid at 450 knots at 6000 feet AGL by 23 miles long yielding roll of film capturing 4 mile x 25 mile imaging. Biologists were sure that the range could only support about 30 bears. Field study showed at least 100. IR film clearly showed slight differences in body heat and body shapes--results both sets of film showed 232 bears present in the grid....you guessed it, biologists insisted it was totally inaccurate; in capturing order of battle info it is scary accurate. Of course what do I know, BS in Zoology, and Chemical Engineering worked last summer of college for USFWS doing population studies in the field. I then decided flying high performance jets was a lot more fun and no one questions your skill when you come back alive.

Some solutions for livestock owners who have to deal with wolves. It has been suggested that those owners put up
Wolf proof fences. Great idea-those in favor of wolves, anti up the money to buy, install and maintain the fences. If it
is necessary to physically go out and protect the livestock,
wolf loves should be required to provide the man power and
money to do that. The government already pays for wolf killed
livestock it should be strengthened to where not only is the
animal paid for but an additional 3 generations. Not only should the government pay up. Those who so favor wolves
should be required to put up the money also. The livestock
owners should be paid directly for their time and their
equipments time when involved in dealing with wolves. In other words"PUT UP OR SHUT UP"!! I also feel that as whole
we hunters should be able to sue those persons or entities
that introduced the wolves for willfully harming our resource
for a food source and enjoyment. If the Indians can demand
Standing for fish and a river we sportsmen should demand
Standing for wildlife against the wolf population.

The government does not pay for wolf or for that matter any predator killed livestock. Some well to do ranches have litigated settlements from various Wolf proponent groups. Most small to medium ranches are run on a "hobby" basis and can't afford the costs. Our three family ranches have documentation of wolf predation (37) and not a cent has been forth coming.

I hear all sides of this. If you listen to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the wolves are the epitome of a threat to the whole ecosystem. Western sheep and cattle ranchers will pretty much back that up. We must maintain a balance in the population, or we stand a chance to have another animal go extinct. That cannot happen. I seriously doubt the wolves in the west, will get to the problems caused by feral hogs and coyotes in Texas.

Where do you get your information that cattle ranchers receive subsidies from the government for loss cattle? That has never happened and it never will. I hate to tell you we got paid for lost livestock proven to be killed by bears in Colorado for years. You might want to check your facts before you speak. I can show you the check stubs!
