I'm building a rifle to donate as a fundraiser to the folks at Yellowstone Bible Camp. I have a 7mm barrel Remington long action and long action McMillan stock. I'm trying to decide on caliber, which would you rather have? I think the 280ai is cooler but the 7rm has much more factory ammo support. The goal is to raise money for the camp so I guess the question is which do you think would appeal to more folks?

7 MAG all the way.

Also pressed for time and didn't feel a need to read 200 opinions about it. If he wants the gun ready as a prize to give to the winner after the drawing then the 7 mag simply because of ammo availability and it might be easier to sell if the winner chooses to do that. Being a portsider, a RH rifle is of little interest to me.

If an IOU for a new rifle is ok then I'd let the winner decide.

Fair enough but as my original response to you, you only need to read page 1, not 200+ opinions. If you manage to read the rest, you'll find out that the OP's query has been answered in the first two pages (as with "most" threads ).

As my original response to the OP in #7, keep it simple and don't complicate his good intentions unnecessarily. I too recommends the 7MM RM. Cheers!

Been reading this since the first day of post....
It's actually a tough decision in my head....i have owned a few 7rm in various rifles...and yes..they shoot..killed a bull at 346yds..shot him in the ear..darn near lost him in the sage because his head spun around under his body.....stumbled upon him....then stumbled out with the packs after dark with dead flashlite....(dont try thus at home...the sage was tall enough to hide massive boulders in the moonlite.....)
Good cartridge...no doubt...wow factor....not really any longer..been out a long time...factory loads or handloads...
280ai....got one....shoots good...hqvent killed anything but paper with it...pack rifle...will definitely get the job done as well as the 7rm in range...
I rather like the cartridge because of its uniqueness....as will others...probably same reason i got mine....to have and to hold on occassion til death or budget do us part.....
Handloads and factory available....
The biggest difference i see is cost of factory ammo....
280ai is more expensive...but will time drop the price....doubtful...

280ai....unique...shoots and handles well in lighter weight rifles....
After all..making this rifle and giving it away...is Obviously your way of trying to keep the heritage going....

It will be an auction not a raffle. I had not thought about building the rifle after the fundraiser that's a good idea. I figured being able to see and touch the actual rifle would help it sell.

Since it's an auction I would take the components and get a voucher from ur gunsmith for (x) amount of dollars you had planned to spend on building it then the buyer can take everything to the gunsmith and get what they want. That at least should satisfy most ppl.
Another thing u can do is auction tickets at the auction. So if a ticket is $100 everyone bids for how many tickets they want, winner get x amount runner up is asked if they would like the same amount of tickets, then do it again until momentum is lost then ask everyone who wants one or two tickets and go around the floor until everyone is in the draw then draw for the rifle.
This method is very effective, buying tickets gives no public recognition to business owners and not everyone can afford the rifle, this way you capture both crowds

Sorry fellas I still don't have a clear yes or no from the camp president. It is looking like a raffle will be possible they are discussing the legality and the red tape for the non-profit. Thanks for all the suggestions and interest
