.30-06 and hammer bullets

Running the 181's at 3490FPS....they hit hard!!! If I had more twist maybe I'd run the 199. I used to believe in absolute heaviest for caliber you can but the raw combination of speed with the 181's B.C it's hard to run with for a hunting bullet.

I'd run the 166 Sledge Hammer for your application. Fast, Flat and super hard hitting with the bigger hollow point!

These bullets are comparable in size to the next weight class up in lead core. You'll have lots of material to dump into an animal.

I want to try some hammer bullets this year in my .30-06 for an elk hunt. Which weight would you recommend? Shots will be within 100-300 yards, mostly likely closer to 100 yards.

Would the sledgehammer line be better for shorter range?

For elk hunting, I recommend 165 grain Noslor Partiction with 65 grains of IMR4350. My father and I have been using this load for over 30 years with fantastic results

My thinking is accuracy over a couple hundred FPS, so the H4350 may be my load. I need to test it at distance now.

Any difference is between Hammer bullets and Barnes bullets?
Both are all copper construction. They look a lot like TSX's.
Difference so far is that Hammers shed weight while Barnes retains its weight and doubles in diameter after impact.
I probably don't have all the info regarding Hammers so if someone can sell me on them, I'd appreciate the info, maybe I'll give them a go as well.
Currently running 200Gr TSX's, 90gr of H1000 out of a 300RUM.
Might run Hammers out of my 30-06.

@HARPERC hit it pretty well.

Bullet to bullet consistency with a bullet that is cnc lathe turned vs a bullet that is formed and the Hammers are of a much softer copper. Our patented drive band system based on a radius form consistently seals the bore (tight our loose) without creating over pressure issues or poor accuracy. We only run open hollow points on our hunting bullets because it is the most consistent form for reliable terminal performance.

Federal Premium cases are nickel plated. Vital-Shok are too - from what I gather.
I don't like nickel plated -- harder to process brass for reloading and the nickel flakes-off at the mouth. - But a real good cartridge for those who do not reload (handload).
