Just wondering how many know the difference between calibre and cartridge?

Thank you guys all very encouraging words. I just got reamed out on another post for explaining this topic to a member. He was wrong and called me a moron go figure I know not to take this to heart and not all will be as rude as this guy.
I remember when I went to buy my first rifle I was looking at a 7Rem Mag but the 280Rem was being introduced. I really liked the280 but at that time it was also known as the 7 Rem Express I believe. To me that could be confusing and I went with the magnum. I had a few guys to talk to around here but just wanted the less confusing cartridge. It was nice back then to have the wisdom of the older guys to help me though.

I once owned a 7mm Express. I still have a box of Remington 7mm Express ammo.

I agree it's dangerous how so many people would believe that just because it's the same caliber you can shoot any 6.5 ammunition through a 6.5 creedmore! It's up to those of us that do know to inform those who don't. I believe that it should be done in an encouraging way that doesn't make them feel stupid.

I had really decided to just move on from the thread, but bumped into the silliness that is the internet as soon as I made that decision.

Having seen none of the series "Shooter" before, the main character mocks a hunter carrying a .223, stating it won't kill anything but squirrels, and the owner has obviously been duped by Wal-Mart. Of course the hunters were portrayed in a bad light.

When they set Swagger in the modern day instead of Vietnam, turned Nick Memphis into a black girl, and decided to make the Black King rifle a .338 with the stupid looking carry handle and chassis instead of the Model 70 Bull Gun with an Unertl scope it was supposed to be I decided I will never watch the show no matter how much I loved the books.

On the topic at hand I think it is a very important conversation to have because I've seen the problem first hand. When a buddy of mine turned 12 his grandfather bought him a mid 2000's Model 70 Black Shadow in .243. However when they took it to the range they infact learned that the salesman had sold him a .243 WSSM instead of a regular .243 Winchester. He just went to the store, asked for a .243 and was given that instead of what he wanted.

i've read several of the bob lee books. i'm with you. the show is pretty bad. plus in the movie, he starts off shooting right handed and by the end he's shooting left handed. then he head shoots 3 guys, while standing, in a boat, with a .22 from at least 100 yards. the writers in hollyweird are too busy sexually assaulting each other to do research about something.

as for the OP, i'll correct someone about 556/223 or 308/762x51 chambering and what can be used in them. but it's not my problem if you're a moron and can't check a barrel for the chambering prior to buying it - especially if it's an oddball caliber. i own property that i shoot on, so i'm not worried about someone blowing up their gun next to me. when you're going to buy a tool that's designed to destroy things, you have the responsibility to learn how to use it.

I agree that people should educate themselves enough to know how to identify what type of firearm they purchase and what ammunition it takes. It's very easy to identify, sure. I think the point that most on here are trying to make is that there are a lot of people out there who don't understand, and those who do understand should try to help.
For those who are arrogant and don't want help, best of luck! But for those who just don't understand, we should all take time to help out.
I don't want to be anywhere near someone who blows up their gun for any reason. Not only does it put them in harm's way, but it will put anyone in close proximity in harm ad well. And I don't want to see anyone injured from that. No matter who it is. And certainly don't want to take shrapnel myself.
Again, I think the point is, help others to understand if they are willing to listen and learn. There will always be those who think they know more and who are unwilling to listen, or are too proud. But for the ones who are good people that don't understand and want to learn...we should help. We have all made mistakes and if someone can benefit from them then I think it is our responsibility to share.

I walked into a local gunshop looking at the reloading components they stocked. When I asked the guy behind the counter to pull a couple boxes of Sierra 7mm, he asked me if I wanted 7mm Mag, 7mm-08, etc. I proceeded to tell him I was just looking at bullets, not ammunition. His response was, "Oh, you want bullet heads..." I was astonished that the guy behind the counter of a gun store, with a handgun on his hip, selling this stuff for a pay check, didn't know the difference between "bullet" and "ammunition." I didn't buy anything and haven't been back since.

CALIBRE= The TRUE bore size of a BARREL, whether it's a rifle or handgun.
For instance, the 300WM uses the BORE size in it's name, the 308 Winchester uses the BULLET diameter in it's name. The 30-06 is a doozey, it has bore size and year of introduction in it's name. The 30-30 is another, bore size and grains of powder used, like that of the 45-70.

CARTRIDGE= Whatever the designer/maker wants to call it.
For instance, the 38 Special is neither a .380" bore or bullet diameter, it is in fact a .350" bore and .358" bullet.
Another example is British names that aren't describing the bore size or bullet size, such as the .404 Jeffrey, bore size is .416" and bullet size is .423"

Hence for noobies, it is difficult deciphering all this gibberish unless they educate themselves that all 300's are 308's and all 6.5's are .264's etc, etc.

Cheers.

"bullet heads" that's a good one, LOL.
I did a search for a particular bullet several years ago and ran into that term. I couldn't believe it.
I just tried to find it again and there are a few stores advertising "bullet heads". ***!

Bullet Head is a very common term in England for some reason. Here in NZ and in Australia we use projectiles just as you do in the USA.

People that would use the term bullet head in an add for their store may have a bullet shaped head. I do not mean a round nose bullet either I am talking high BC boat tail bullet. Then again maybe it should be a semi wad cutter where the there is no fore head just goes straight back from the eye brows. When I started this thread I never knew how it would be taken. I am glad that for the most part members have shown an intrest in wanting to help others.
