Hey guys, thinking about building a custom 300 win mag. My question is, in your opinion, who makes the most accurate rifle under $5000?
Thanks in advance

You will make the most precise rifle for under $3000. The plug & play components on the market these days is amazing! You just need a modicum of mechanical ability to use a torque wrench, some hex keys, and headspace gauges. Send the barrel blank to a reputable smith/machine shop, $375-450 to chamber, muzzle cut & thread.

The lighter you want the rig it seems the more expensive things get. For example, Carbon fiber barrel, and stock.

Another quick and easy is to buy a barreled action from someone like Altus. Impact, defiance, pick the action and you are looking at $2500. Then buy a chassis and you are in business.
If we aren't including the price of optics and have 5K to spend on a rifle?!?! Whoah buddy, we can certainly do some creative thinking! LOL

This is purely relative. It would help if you defined accuracy. If I do my part, I have a budget semi-custom build under $1000 that shoots .5-.75 MOA to 1000Y with my current load.

Should have been more specific. I'm looking to build a long range gun that shoots less than .5 moa. What gunsmith is recommended

Vestal's Custom Rifles in Washington County, Virginia

16230 Lee Hwy
Bristol, VA. 24202

You will have to look extremely hard to find a better rifle maker and honest as well in the USA. He knows very well the world on accuracy and extreme distance.

Thank you. That's good to know because he isn't far away.

I am fortunate to have plenty of access to reputable gunsmith/gunbuilders, most of whom are less than an hour's drive. Not in your neck of the woods, but here are some for your consideration ...

Long range what? Hunting? Bench gun? F-class rifle? Lightweight? Heavy? Overall length considerations?

What is your definition of long range?

.5 moa at 100 yards? 1000? A mile?

Are you capable of shooting 1/2moa?

I'll cut the other way.

List of competent gunsmiths probably too long for me to type on a phone. Actually with the beauty of the internet the last three I've used couldn't really be discerned between each other. We're lucky to live in an age with some really quality Smiths out there.

Your going to shoot what fits you best, from any of many competent smith's. Do what you can to find exactly what you like, then shop a smith who specializes in that lane.
