Just wondering how many know the difference between calibre and cartridge?

A lot of people substitute caliber for cartridge. I know I have. Sure, it's not technically correct, but if someone asks me what caliber I'm shooting I'm pretty sure what they mean. I think it's become a generic substitute for cartridge. Of course I also say "ain't" and "gonna"

Azreal yes our language is maybe evolving I sincerely hope you learn to speak the text language that will be gr8. As for me I would prefer our older English language where people knew how to spell and knew what initials really stood for.
As I stated earlier you are one of the few who seems to care less about this topic. However you are the only one who ca not let it go.

It went about how I expected. When someone is corrected but actually knows the difference I expect them to get their hackles up a good portion of the time - so I don't think this response is unusual and is about what we will see if people are corrected with regularity.

I am kind of upset with myself for not approaching my last few commenys better. I would like to know though is our gun language evolving or as the The Oregonian said have people began to stay away from altercation because some won't change. If this is true what Harper C said will take place on ballots and some or maybe many will vote the wrong way. Why because they will have forgot the actual term and definitions of words. My thread question could have been better worded as after I read it over later on it did sound rather snarky. It was not meant to be that way and maybe gave some people the impression that I thought I was better than them.

You guys are right. It's human nature. And I don't really think anyone likes being corrected. I can see how the discussion turned, and why. I read the op several times before deciding to comment. But I thought if everyone would go about it right it could make for a great discussion. But I guess in today's world, someone will get offended no matter what the topic, comment, or discussion is. Kinda sad really.

One thing I did notice in an earlier post about guns being listed by caliber and the gun manufacturers using the 'incorrect' terminology. That's not exactly right. They are listed by caliber from smallest to largest on most sites. Then in the sub listing they are listed by cartridge. I haven't taken their listing as using the the 2 terms interchangibly. It just means that they offer rifles chamber for many calibers, and many cartridges within those calibers.
They actually list by both caliber and cartridge.

A piece of it for sure, but I think a lot is the newness of the medium. We're adapted to better than half of communication being body language cues, tone, and volume. We lose the sense of proportion that comes from the presence of a trusted elder.

Mentoring face to face is difficult to achieve, but remains the best way to educate, and correct. As old guys we got too many guns, and not enough disciples, while at the same time there're are beginners, and youngsters in our circles starving from lack of opportunity.

That's the way I think it should be ! Anyone that doesn't know that a 30 cal. could be many different cartridges shouldn't be messing with guns! And there are many different calibers. For instance the following are all 30 calibers but are meant to be used in DIFFERENT chambered guns ! 30-30 WIN., 300 win. mag., 308 Win., 308 Norma mag., 30-06, 300 ultra mag., 300 H&H mag , 378-30 plus many more all being 30 cal., all to be used in "different" rifles ! If a shooter using any of these rifles was to be asked what caliber he was using, the correct answer for any of them would be a 30 caliber ! Then he should go on to state the chambering for the rifle.

Everyone of us started exactly here. All of us, have had to unlearn erroneous information. The question is how to instruct those that don't know.

When the student is ready the Master will arrive.
