Magnetospeed sporter?

I have the sporter model. Works great for me. Have used it on my 22lr, 17 hornet and up to .308 win.

Guess I'm the 'odd man out' here. This is interesting, though. Are you guys doing anything different besides utilizing the 2 different spacers for varying barrel sizes that come with it? Or using a particular sensitivity setting for brakes?

I bought a sporter. It works great. Not leaving me wanting more, it does what its supposed to. It does make my groups higher, 10-12", but they are still consistent with accuracy. Ive been using it at my range that goes to 800yards and i dial down the correction when magneto is attached and its still producing groups the same as without it attached.

I have the Sporter as well. Works just great. The only thing I don't like is that it attaches to your barrel. That's why I got the wiser precision mount

Ever wish you got the v3?

Not really. I mean it would be nicer. The sporter is not as user friendly with the display but it works. I'm not a competition shooter and only reload for 4 rifles at the moment so it's not a problem for me.

I have noticed 1 of my rifles seems to open up in groupings with it on. But the others I can't tell a difference.

Deputy,
Use the different spacers only for small barrels. I don't have any.
No special setting for brakes. Only for speed. Default seems around 3200 fps. If your load is faster choose different speed option. I've clocked upwards of 3600 with mine no problem.

I'll have to mess with it a little more when my next build gets returned from the Smith (soon I hope). It will have a brake on it....

I just looked up the Wiser mount. Looks awesome, does it mount to your swivel stud or do you need a pic rain mount?
You do have to mount it to a pic rail. I had to put one on my rifles. Wasn't a big deal but is something to consider. The mount is super solid. Wiser precision did a fantastic job. Now the magneto speed stays on anytime I'm shooting. Only comes off when hunting. It's super nice to be able to shoot for groups and velocities at the same time while maintaining your zero and the complete system is still much less expensive than a Lab radar.

How do you attach a picitanny rail to a hunting rifle which doesn't have one? For example one with a typical sporter style stock?

If your stock has two studs as some do you just buy one that's designed for that stock. If you only have one stud then you will have to drill. Check out long range only. He sells a pic rail kit and has an instructional video you can watch. It's very informative.

I reload for hunting to medium ranges, not super long range and not for competition. I have always used a prochrono chronograph that usually functions decent enough. That being said, it can be a pain to setup, especially with others at the range and sometimes I find the readings to likely be inconsistent due to sunlight conditions, so I have been eyeballing the magnetospeed sporter. (the speed V3 and the labradar are just too expensive for me). From what I read, it's downfall is the fact it is on the barrel so using it while doing accuracy testing is not exactly wise since it can mess with the barrels harmonics. I don't think this will be too much of a problem for me. My intentions will to be using it for checking for pressure signs while testing for max charges. Then using it to check speed and spreds after I find some accuracy nodes. What are your thoughts? What am I losing not going with a magnetospeed V3? Will it function ok with breaks...including radial breaks? Thanks!

The bottom-line, it boils down to personal preference and your budget. The budget is almost always the main driver.
