Remington Long Range 5R... Have I lost my mind?

No, so far all I've shot in it are Norma, Sirocco, and Game King's.

It's shot all three very well. The Norma 130g VLD that Prime loads in their factory ammo has been extremely accurate and has been just nasty on varmints/predators. It did a decent job on Deer in that it certainly killed them but I wasn't impressed with the huge exit wounds, too much like the Berger for me in that regard.

As soon as I get time I've got some of the Peregrine 124g VRG4's I want to give a try on deer and hogs before the end of the season.

I bet those sciroccos are awesome as an all-around bullet in that caliber! Those, the accubond, and the 127 LRX would be me go-to if I had one.

How has the overall experience been with the newer MODEL 700 5-R SERIES GEN 2 model in .300 Winchester Magnum? I am in the market for a long range .300 Win Mag but have a very limited budget.

I can only tell you this, as much as I like the .260 if I didn't already own several .300wm's I'd buy one in the 5R Gen 2.

The Sirocco II is a great bullet when it works as designed but even in .260 I've had problems with them over expanding and flattening out to the point it's ridiculous causing them to go shearing off at odd angles. Accubonds always perform it seems pretty much in line with their design but to this point the Peregrine's performance on game is the best I've seen in the .260.

Nice clean one shot kills on white tail with chest and spine shots and extremely good performance even on big hogs shot through the neck/shoulder with complete pass throughs and two finger sized exit wounds which is about perfect in my book. To be honest I was somewhat surprised with them being a monolithic copper alloy bullet still opening well even at the relatively slower speeds of the .260 compared to the .300 Rum and .300wm I've been shooting them in.

They also make the 6.5 in 130 and 140gr both of which I'm going to give a ride as soon as they get another shipment in.

I have two Gen1 5R's (24" .308 Win, and 26" .300WM)... They're worth the money. They will, of course, need a trigger swap immediately, but so will any new Remington.

Just tried some 200gr ELD-x loads in my 300WM Milspec, Comparable performance using the same load I use for Berger 210/215's.

You know, you could always sell-off a few of your .300WM's or use the actions for other builds, and get yourself a 5R .300WM and 5R .308 Win to match your .260 Rem...

Yep, I could but I don't see that happening.

If a guy is going to own a .300wm at all he should own one in a Model 70 Win.

I'm probably going to take one of them, my EW and put a heavier barrel on it, on another rebarrel for .264wm, and I have two more, one of which I'm leaning real hard on rebarreling to .375 Ruger running a 28" barrel to see just how far and how fast I can run the .270's with good accuracy.

I don't know how many more trips I'll make to Africa but a guy just can't hunt Africa without taking a .375 and do it justice. As much as I like the Ruger Alaskan .375R I think a longer barreled version would just be a blast.

Hard to beat that.

I almost hate to admit it and didn't realize it before buying it but the fluting, or perhaps more correctly "scalloping" they did with the 3 flutes and the black Cerakote finish adds a level of "cool" to the Gen 2 that to me makes it kind of a pretty special rifle particularly since it shoots so well.

If all goes to plan, I should be ordering my 5R Gen2 .260 Rem (Christmas present to myself) sometime within the next few weeks. I also plan on ordering a Rem 700 Tac 16.5" .300 BLK to play with. I have a 16" .300 BLK upper I built for my AR back in 2015, and that cartridge has really grown on me. I think a bolt-action version would be much cheaper and economical to feed (reloading), more fun to shoot, more accurate at longer distances (400-500 yards), quieter (no bolt cycling), and with the right can on it, would sound like a CO2-powered pellet gun with subsonics.

Good to see you have good experience with the newer 260 5r gen 2 ......... I as well was very reluctant to buy a "newer" factory 700 since they sold out to the larger outdoors group and QC dropped like mad ......... I did buy a 5r gen 2 in 308 with a 20" barrel ,, I swapped the stock to the lighter weight LTR HS precision , full action bedded it and through a timney in it set at 2lbs .. My best 100 yd group with it has been around a .2 5shot group ,, I also did the 1k milk jug challenge with it with a 15mph wind , I was dialed in on shot 3 and completed on shot 4 .Shot 5 I took to the target for confirmation that it wasnt luck . I may jump on the 260 gen 2 to get me out there further .

7.62X40WT might be another good choice for a bolt gun...not so hot on the subs though. I'm not sure what is louder on my BLK...the action noise, the brass hitting the ground, or the bullet smack :D

That's some nice shooting!
Based on similar success over the years with my Remington Mil specs(308's and 300WM), I decided to to build a similar rig using an R5 Bartlein Varmint contour on a Remington LA in 6.5x284(my personal favorite). I stocked it with a McMillan A3 and installed a Huber 2 stage trigger. It has turned out to be quite a good shooter as well. While a bit on the heavy side for lugging in the field, that Varmint contour is very stable for the long shots!

Nice shooting. All I've done with mine was bed the recoil lug and under the chamber the length of the case and work over the factory trigger. I remain incredibly impressed with the consistent accuracy of this rifle shooting various types and weights of factory ammo and a half dozen different custom loads using 4 different powders and four different bullets.

There is one flaw in the workmanship and that's in the drilling of the scope mounts which are a bit off of center. It's far enough off that with some scopes there isn't enough windage adjustment to get a hundred yard zero but it wasn't a problem with the scope I chose to mount on it and if I ever decide I want to fix it, it is of course a very simple fix.

Overall I'd be hard pressed to be any happier.
