Who makes and which model is the best range finder.. best being long distances.. a whitetail at 1300 or so yards...

Thanks

I have owned a leica 1200 and I now upgraded to a 1600. The 1600 definately works to 1600 yards and beyond, I find if I give it a good 4 seconds paulse before I give it the second press to range something it works very well, the scan function sucks past 1300 yards. Others might disagree but a deer at 1300 plus better be wrapped in tin foil to get a read. I have ranged big furry cows and horses out to 1000, 1100 but thats about it.

What if a guy is only interested in say 500-600 yard coverage? Are the "also rans" good enough? Im trying to run down one for say $300 or slightly less with only say 500 yd capabiltys.

A good second hand Leica 1200 will serve you well, and the scan feature with in that distance is instant.

Vectronics PLRF-xx (in my case the PLRF-10) - purchased through Potomac Group.

I have owned at least 5 swaros, two leica 1600s and they are all like toys compared to the plrf 15. That said a swaro will get most of us to the furthest ranges we should be shooting anyway. The vectronix stuff carries a big price tag but is a really nice tool for any ELR shooters.
