Hey all! As some of you may know, I have been on the fence on having my .270 rebarreled and jumping back and forth on ideas for the last couple years. Well, that is all coming to a close. I finally decided to do a straight .284 and I couldn't be happier. I have always liked this round, and I'm really excited to be putting one together. I have everything in hand or on order and I will be sending it off to Adam Bentley, owner of The Dresdan Gun Company, to have the barrel and brake installed. Below is my parts list and the components I plan on using. I will keep this thread updated as the project comes together. Thanks!

Remington 700 LA
Remington ADL Walnut stock, pillar and skim bedded with Devcon
Old Remington Trigger, tuned to 2.5lbs
Bartlein 5R 1-8 twist #3 contour, will be finished at 25"
Hawkins 3 port brake, will be contoured to barrel diameter
Vortex HS 4-16x44
Leupold Rings and Base

PTG .284 Norma Match reamer, 0.208 Freebore, .3188 neck
Norma .284 Brass
Hornady .284 dies
Hornady 180gr ELD-M
Federal 210M
RL26

good luck with your build. I had a 1-9 Brux barrel laying around so last year I built a 284 it is the nicest gun to shoot low recoil, easy load development, the 25 inch barrel is just the right balance for velocity and handling. should have built this sooner.

I am really looking forward to shooting it and seeing how it does. I'm shooting for 2750-2800 with the 180 ELD.

I haven't shot the 180 ELDM but did try the Berger 175 EH and RL-26 for just shy of 2900 and 165 game changer with RL-26 for close to 2950.

Man that's great velocity! What powder charge did you start at and max out with using the 175 Bergers? Also, what brass are you running and what freebore? Thanks

Thank you! That is some great velocity! Did you say you have a 25" as well?

25 inch Brux on Savage 116 action sitting in a Mcmillan A-3 stock with a 5-20 Nikon Monarch.
only gun I own that is legit 1/2 MOA or better day in day out as long as my head isn't up my rear end

Sweet build man! I have read so much on the .284 being such an accurate cartridge with great ballistics as well. 1/2 MOA day in and day out is what I would love to see out of mine.

keep an eye on the Hornady dies mine was over sizing the case at the web.
the chamber is .501 fired cases will be .499-.500 and my die would size it back to .495- .4955
it was over working and causing cracks like case head separation. after 5-6 reloads

Thanks for the heads up. I will make sure I check my brass and keep an eye on things. If the die sizes them down that much, I will look into getting a Redding or Forster full length die.

Sounds like a fun package Jud.

The 284 was so far ahead of its time back in 1963. Imagine a 35 degree shoulder back then! I cut into a Winchester case years ago and found the wall thickness just above the web to be thicker than Winchester's 300 win mag.

I have had a 284 since early 80s. Have used up a few barrels and killed many coues wt, javelina and several elk not to mention jackrabbits and coyotes.

Current one is with a 23.5" barrel, a set back and rechambered 7-08. Shoots Berger hunting 168 VLD @ 2925 fps with 52 gr of RL-17. Fed 210 primers.

I had so many Winchester pieces I opted to order a reamer with a .315" neck so I could turn the necks. OAL right at 3.050" to fit and feed from SA. Throated so 168 VLD is .010" into lands. Base of bullet is very close to neck shoulder junction.

I would love to get some of the norma 284 brass but with over 600 pieces of old win brass there is no need.

Are you going to hunt with the 180 ELD-M?

Looking forward to hearing more on your project.

Keep us posted I love my 284. 22" shooting 168 vld classic hunter at 2800 shoots one hole at 100 if I do my part. I shot a 1.75" group at 400 with it that was as far as the range went and just killed an elk at 919 with it. Oh ya Im running a can on it also that's why the shorter barrel
