Which .284 build?

Greetings all, first post.

I have a new .284 Shilen match SS #5 barrel and would like to build a new rifle.
Original plan was 280Rem.

In your opinion, which rifle would you "sacrifice" for the new .284 L/A build?
I have the choice of: 30-06, 270Win or 7mm Mag. All straight factory Rem700 rifles.

Which cambering? again I was thinking 280Rem, but would like to hear others opinions.

Original thought was to"sacrifice" the 7mm Mag
(Modifying the bolt face is not a concern)

I have the brass, bullets & dies for all, including the possible future 280rem (NOT AI).

Building for SC deer rifle, but would also like to hit gongs @ 100 - 600yds.

I would build off whatever gun is closest to your new chambering. I would get rid of the 7 rem and go for a 7 WSM or 7 Dakota.

Why would he do that when it's much easier to build and find brass for a 7mm STW.

I'm not a fan of belted cases. So I would recommend a smooth case.

I like my 284 Winchester rifles but have only shot my M88. Waiting on the stock for the single shot.

If it were me I'd use the 270 to make a 284.

I am a huge fan of the .284 have the barrel done with enough freebore to shoot the heavier bullets and your set. If you need more than that bump it up to the 7SAUM or a 7WSM.

.270 has never intrigued me...And I like all kinds of calibers, but I've never really liked the .270 or standard .30-06.

The 7mm RemMag is an awesome caliber. I've hunted with one for over a decade now. Great caliber.

The 7RM is tops, .30-06 AI would be next in line, and the more I think about it, I would snatch the barrel off that .270 and make it a 6.5 Sherman or a .25-06 AI (I'm building one at the moment).

Yeah, the more I think about it, the 6.5 Sherman or .25-06 AI would be the way to go, that way you have capabilities in all corners of the spectrum....Varmint & deer (.25-06 AI), deer & elk (.30-06 or 7RM), and LR deer and elk (7RM). Everyone needs a wildcat in their stable.

Before Im done I'll have both a .270 AND a 30-06. They both do the job they were intended for and designed for surperbly...maybe nothing more than that but at least that..

As far as wildcats and AI versions.etc...etc...Ive had my fill of them. Ive got this 25-06AI that I'll never get finished fire forming casings for to get a good supply of loaded ammo...its just too much of a PITA. In fact so much so that next year I might get it rebarreled....its just took good of an action to let it sit in the vault.

Another $175 gets me a magnum bolt for it...and then Im home free to make it whatever I decide I want

Im just not sure what Im going to do with that rifle. I hate like everything about getting rid of the action and such... ( Its a LA Stiller SST) but the PITA of the fireforming...geeze what a pain.

You don't have to sell the whole rifle...Why not just rebarrel it with a .280 AI, since you can buy brass and dies for it already...No fire-forming required.

And in the meantime you can be cash-ahead when I buy the dies and brass and stuff...

I was serious, the money's just sitting there waiting, and I would love to get this caliber going before deer season in 2 months...That's a short time for smith work, and to fire-form, and develope a load...But YOU can make this happen.

Keep the 270 and 30.06. Two historic calibers, both of which I am extremely fond of and use for the bulk of my rifle hunting. I have a Shilen barreled 7mm Rem Mag that Shilen did for me. It is the FIRST rifle I ever shot a one hole group with. My bbl is a #4 select match.

I recommend taking your existing 7RM and improving it with the new barrel. It is a perfect contour and enjoy it. I don't mind belted cases. I've never had a problem finding brass or getting stellar loads.

To my surprise, I was talking to the owner of a well known action company and I asked him what he would build for himself for the "perfect" hunting rifle for the bulk of his hunting and his answer was, "A 7RM, with my action of course, and a 26" Shilen barrel, Jewel trigger, and McMillan stock."
