I have a 7.75 lb bare rifle in 338LM that with optics is 9.25 lbs. It has a break and I shove a 300 gr pill out of it. It is not something I want to shoot all day at the range but is not offensive either. It feels like a large push vs a slap at that weight. It is used primarily for Elk/Bear/Moose so it only goes boom a few times a year.

I won't carry a rifle heavier than 10 lbs over the mtns. Good luck!
About 3,000 fps ?

338's R my Fav. I have everything from .338 Whisper 4 subsonic to my .338 Ultra Rogue (Edge w/bit more CAPACITY) since 95 my Custom 340 has been my go to Elk Rifle <8#'s ole Chet Brown Kevlar/Fibreglass Straight Comb Bedded stock - 26"#5 SS 9.5 Gain Twist Barrel, 215 Gr. TTSX @ 3290 FPS (5 into 1.25"@300metres)... Atlas Bipod - Carry it all day in Foothills & lower Cdn.Rockies (now 1/2 day @71) off bipod can reacquaint W/ target when longer than 600 metres - easy carry compared to 15# Rogue - Go4it
get your stock - make barrel a bit "end" heavy so less jump or small brake
I notice recoil off bipod or bench, Hunting Nope!!!!
good luck & have fun

SWEET

338's are a fun cartridge in the knock down power is definitely a factor for me! I have a 338 Lapua that weighs in at about 16lbs and is not for hunting but do use it for coyotes at long range. My hunter is a 338 SDM which is a 8 mm rem mag taken to 338 with the shoulders blown out or improved. Fire forming is essential to working with this caliber but it's basically a 340 Bee on steroids! Mine is throated for 250's and it shoot them at a respectable 2980 FPS it's built on a 700LA stainless with a Smith barrel just upgraded to a trigger tech trigger and a Cadex hunter lightweight chassis! Next is a brake for it but it's still a great rifle especially now that I have aics pattern 3.850 mags for it and get the full accuracy out of it! Comes in at just over 9lbs

I currently have a 338 lapua, it comes in at 14.4 lbs. Im looking at building a light weight 338 lapua or Improved shooting 300gn bergers. I elk hunt with my current rifle but would like to drop a few pounds with all the hiking we do. Just returned from WY and hiked 32 miles in 5 days. Our group went 5 for 5 on cows.

Anyone have experience with a light weight rifle in these calibers?
Would you go improved or standard 338 lapua?
If you want a light Rifle you have to go down in caliber 308 7mm08 3006 270 or 264 win mag the 338 lapua has to be heavy to control it

Depends on barrel length, but can be for sure.
Seems like before I improved my 338, I was in the ball park of just under 2900 fps with a 30" barrel running 300s. After improving it, I was getting 3030-3050. Accuracy was around 2875 for the standard LM. Accuracy seems better at the higher velocities with the improved. Around 3030 is my best accuracy with RL33
