I am thinking of up grading my long range hunting from the 270 wsm to a 280 Ackley. Anyone have any ideas of ballistics?

Never been a big fan of the .270 calibers, as I have always shot 7mm's (it wouldd be slightly redundant to own both since their so close in diameter)...So I would have to go with the .280 Ackley. Plus, the .280 Ackley is one hell of an all-around caliber.

Trigger, rethink the upgrade, the 270 wsm with 165 matrix will outperform the 280 ai

If the new Nosler long range Accubond pans out I think it will give new life to the .270 caliber long range game. I shoot both the old 270 and the wsm. Both are hard to beat. No experience with .280 ai however.

I agree that the LRAB is gonna give new life to the 270 WSM, heck even the 270. You can run a 162 at 3000 with a .625 BC with a 280AI. The 270 win with the 150 LRAB is going to be right on the 280AIs heels. The 270 WSM is going to be a tad ahead of the 280AI. I am thinking about rebarreling one of my 6.5WSMs to 270WSM now that the LRAB is available.

Well the 280AI allows you to take advantage of the better ballistics of the .284 bullets.

Velocity wise you are going to average just a tad less than the Remington 7mag.

Excellent choice. I have a buddy that shoots it exclusively for all big game and it's never let him down even out to 800yds on deer, elk, sheep etc.

+1! I'm settling (at least for now) in pushing the 175gr Matrix VLD at 2981 FPS out of my .270 AI (30" Lilja, 1:8, 3-groove). My friend is pushing HSM 180gr Berger VLD out of his 7MM Rem Mag (Weatherby) at 2845 FPS.

Apparently some have not found Matrix bullets, I've been enjoying a 165gr .650 BC bullet at 3060fps from my 270WSM for three years now.

Matrix also has a 170gr and a 175gr bullet, Bergers 170gr .703 BC bullet has had air time but just waiting on production for the .277 cals.

The 270 WSM will eat a 280AI's lunch gun)
