Remington 700 Long Range

The Rem 700 LR is one of the better budget platforms if you go into it right. I replace about half the barrels to get acceptable long range precision and 100% of the triggers, retime the bolt handle for primary extraction, mill the action screw holes in the stock a little larger since one invariably touches and bed it. I shoot them first stock then slug the barrels, if i see 1.5 or larger groups with my pet load or the bore gets loose i rebarrel.

That's not a bad deal at all. Even if the barrel is crap you could have the action trued and a quality barrel replaced and still not have much more in it than a Sendero.

I have the Gen 2 Milspec which was an excellent shooter out of the box and with a little trigger work and bedding got even better.

This is definitely a step up from the SPS which is pretty well their bottom of the barrel line.

Depending on the price, may go with the Gen1 5R. I love the look.

In your honest opinion, is the 5R so much better I should skip over the 700 LR ?

Is the Gen1 5Rs THAT much better than the 700 LR, or is it even better at all? This will be my last gun purchase for awhile, because we will be doing some remodeling. So I'm trying to make the best decision possible. I know I don't NEED the .300 Win Mag for what I'm wanting, but it's what I like. I have been looking at rifles in .204, .223, .243, 6mm Cm, and .308s. I'm sure the .204 is a PITA in the wind.

Are there any other rifles I've overlooked and should look at ?

Oh yes,,, there will always be better this and that in rifles and cartrages,,, but some of us boring folks like the fun & frugal... Ha...

I'm one of those dudes in my latter mid years that has spent a chunk of change on rifles,,, bows,,, and fishing gear,, not to mention all those worn out tires and tank fills of fuel to get me into the wilds along the Rocky Mountain Range of Western Canada,,, home of the abundant furry critters that live here... LOL

I'm taking my time cleaning up my old school LR in 30/06,,, it ain't the best of the best,,, nor is it the worst of the worst...

A bit heavy to pack all day at 11 lbs with bullets,,, glass,,, bypod,,, what it lacks in manoverablity it makes up for in accuracy since it has a soft recoil and is super easy to get planted for a ground shot or free-hand,,, my big mitts fit the solid Bell & Carlson stock nice,,, the thing that improves the Remmy's is those custom triggers,,, lots of trigger time allows us to anticipate the break and follow threw of our shots....nothing like watching the furry critters hump-up on impact when those bullets hit the Wrapper... Ha

I agree that the LR's are deffinatly a step up from the SPS line up,,, a solid stock and a bit more weigth for us older shooters since we're not as steady as we once were... Ha...

I'll load up some Hornady ELD-X 178 grain'ers and head to the range,,, pretty easy to bang away on the gongs at 200 on out to 8 and 900 meters,,, a bit further if I choose to shoot past that...

The fox gong at 575,,, big buffalo at 800,,, the Bell at 1170 and so on... 40 main iron gongs along with 100+++ 12" hidden squares to tag at undisclosed distances... The Fred Bragg range is definitely a all in practic range with time to take notes in the log club house with the wood burning fireplace... Warm and dry now that we're getting the -20c cold temps up here... Ha... Its actually pretty fun so long as the winds don't kick up past the 30 to 40 mpr.. Burrrrrr...

Yuppers,,, good times all year long since TV is a waist of time,,, lifes to short when there's lots to do out-side,,, a little bit of everything...

Yes.

When the time comes I'll most likely switch over to a Contour 2.8 Bob Jury 24" or 22" pipe in 25/06 or 270,,, my 338 and 300 magnum days rapped up about 7 or 8 years ago,,, the change up to 30/06 was the best thing that helped me stay in the shooting sports game and hunting... The above is 1 awesome rifle,,, my favourite all in pack unit is a 6.5 A-square in Remmy 700 BDL Left Hand... It to is a bit heavy to pack,,, but I need the work out to keep me young... Ha

The trick for medium heavy weight rifles is the Australian 6 position pack-sling,,, the fast draw drop-off loop allows a shooter to drop/ swing/ acquire/ and shoot fast,,, this is a real plus in the thick timber...
Most folks don't like these slings since they don't practic with them enough,,, and they don't take the time to adjust them properly,,, they forget that this is why there is a extra large adjusting buckle on the fore-end of the sling,,, it allows us to change things up fast for the positions of the rifle if it's rifle forward / barrel tip down or up... Same thing with rifle on the back side of us with / or with-out pack...

We know it's adjusted right when we can drop the loop in one single swoop to pull the rifle into place fast...

Actually I give credit to Remmy and Bell/ Carlson for making the M-40 1A designed stock... Some folks say that these factory Remmy LR stocks feel funny since they give a person the feeling that they are slippery,,, this could be true,,, but the up side is that the well rounded corners lesson the chances of a snag when pulling the rifle from draw into action... There's just enough grip in these LR's since the factory adds textured grip molded into them to last for many years...

Any-who,,, the barrel cleaning shows signs that the throat wear is slowly finishing off this pipe... My plan was to burn it off this spring,,, but it looks like it might hold in there till the fall,,, nothing major if it plays out this way since I'll be packing my 6.5 for the hunting season...

A winter project I'm thinking...

It is kind of nice playing with the old school LR,,, big and bulky with lots of potential to get the shots off...

Hats off to Remington for building this line up of rifle,,, it allows everyone a chance to pick and choose what style of unit they want to pack in a market of endless.choices...

I can honestly say that this rifle has been one of the many I've owned over the years that has kept me in the loop... Frugal buy and good times...

My battle to get life down to 1 gun with a closet hanger as back-up is underway!!!

Here's how it's going to play out with my collection of """4 RIFLES."""

2 of them are heading out the door,,, they'll get turned into the factory rifles they once were,,, all the Bells and Whistles will become back-up rigging for the TWO keepers...

Both are Remington's,,, and both will be in 308 Winchester since I have all the dies and reloading supplies stacked to the roof... Endless of aloooot since the plan is short range shooting sports from 100 to 1000,,, and hunting everything in the area I live... Ha


One will be a copy-cat of the Remmy LR 700,,, the other a mid weight Remmy 700 copy-cat of the M40,,, the one with the wood stock design...

So I'll end up with 2 spare Jewel Match grade triggers,,, 3 threaded barrels,,, and 5 rifle stocks... Oh Yha...

1 will become the main hunter as the other sits as back-up,,, then in the off season the shelved unit will become the plinking and predator control rifle...

TWO birds with TWO stones like my good friend said...

Lots of planning today as I get it sorted once and for all

A couple years ago I would have thought you were crazy. I am down to 3, from close to 15...its liberating. Sold and consolidated and put together 3 rifles I love and shoot lights out. I kept a 223 M700 Varmint, a bergara premier 6mm creedmoor (coyotes and pigs) and a CA BA Tactical in 6.5 PRC (elk and mule deer, black bear). All of them have nice optics...

I hear yha PS,,, its been tough thinning out the herd,,, the 1 rifle is already on consignment as I pick out 1 more of the 3 to go... 2 rifles is the plan...

The thread of too much going on in one of our members threads got me thinking about simplifying things for my self...

I can utilize the 4 sets of 308 Winchester dies,,, 2 sets for each of the 308's as I scale back to 2 units...

Then I can thin out the reloading stuff I no longer need,,, it will be complete freedom at my bench...

1 shelf of all the same bullets,,, 1 shelf of all the same powder,,, the same for the brass and primers... 1 of 1 in supplies for the 2 rifles...

The reason for having a few sets of reloading dies for each rifle will make it easy for reloading since I won't have to adjust the dies once the there set...

I'll buy another Lot of 200 """308 Lapua Palma Brass""" so each rifle has its own stuff...

Freedom 55 is on its way...

My friend sent me a picture of what I'm going to end up with,,, I'll set my optic closer to the barrel then like the one in the photo...

I'm going to do a one rifle setup eventually. If I don't get into the long game, I'm going to get a .375 H&H or .375 Ruger. Hunting out to 500 yards is covered, and up close, you hit Deer like a truck.

See, I could use 270 Interlock for Deer and smaller. A 260 grain Accubond for Elk/Moose size critters. 300gr Partition/Accubond/TSX for big bears, and Africa if I get to go. Then, the 390gr A-Tip for fun.

My friend and I did some planing last night for the 2 gun thing...

Both in the same caliber...

I've had great succes with the hunting loads using the Cullet and FL die set,,, so I'll use them for the 308 Winchester BDL when the time comes,,, the competion dies for my custom 308 Vartec since it will see more shooting range/ predator control stuff...

"""But.""" I need to do some shooting this year to wear down my 6.5 A-square to make this happen,,, Ha...

Then I'll use my take-off Medium weigth BDL 308 barrel when the change-up comes... Its looking like my Remmy 30/06 is leaving home...

I'll put it back to factory specs and send it on its way,,, keeping the Jewel trigger and optics for it along with rings and rails that can switch over to the other rifles we needed...

I bet 10 to 1 I buy another twin Vortex optic to match my other scope so everything is doubled in that department...

Like I mentioned in my above post:

---308 Winchester Lapua Palma Brass with batches for each of the rifles...

---A few more pales of Varget powder to feed them both...

Goosh,,, I might have to take up more lawn chair fishing if things become simple in this scale back plan... Ha

Oh Yha O.K.

I had a 375 H&H in my younger days,,, it was alot of fun,,, I should of got a rubber / gel recoil pad for it in stead of the steel one that the rifle came with,,, the H&H I had was a medium heavy weigth which helped reduce the recoil a bit...
I wasn't into reloading ammo when I owned mine,,, so I ended up shooting 250 and 300 grain'ers if I recall lots of muzzle jump with the heavier bullets...

The 375 is the real game gett'er cartridge of the Americas,,, just like you mentioned,,, they work great for deer on up to the thick skins...

Fun to the max,,, Ha...
