Too fast a rifle barrel twist?

I have a Hart number 3 Contour 7 mm rifle barrel blank with a 1 in 8 twist that I intended on using for a 28 Nosler. I already have two 28 Nosler with Rock Creek and Proof Research barrels that I like. I was thinking about using the 1 in 8 for a 7 mm WSM build shooting Hornady 162 grain eld-x, Berger 168 vld or Nosler 168 accubond long range bullets. My thinking is that a 1 in 9 twist would be better for the 7mm WSM and 160ish bullets, and that the 1in 8 would be more for the 175 180 grain bullets. Is it possible to have to fast of a twist and should I not use my 1 in 8 twist barrel for the 7mm WSM?

I have shot the 168 Berger and 162 ELD-X in am 7mm Dakota with 1-8 as well as a 280 Ackley with 1-9. If it were me, I would use a 1-8 and never look back. It gives you the flexibility to go heavier if you want to and will do just fine with the 160 class bullets.

Have no info for you regarding what's best for your 7WSM, but rarely is there such a thing as 'too fast' a twist.
It is true that a lightly structured bullet may be spun so fast that either the core spins inside the jacket or rotational forces cause the bullet to break up, it is more to do with bullet structure than the actual spin rate.

I would use the fast twist regardless, I use 1:8" for my 6.5's, this is fast, but not so fast that bullets break up. I do not use bullets lighter than 129gr in it, so bullet selection is key.

Thank you. It looks like I'm probably going to have two rifle build projects, one for a 7 mm WSM and one for the 6.5 WSM. Both will have 1 in 8 twist 26 inch # 3 barrels. I have the reamer for the 7 mm WSM but still need to figure the freebore for the 6.5 WSM.
