300 WM bullet for Elk

I loaded the 180 Gr TTSX and thought I'd share the results. I used a ladder test and loaded 2 rounds at each 0.2 gr interval. I think I found a node at 74.4-74.6 gr. the grouping circled at 5-6 is the four rounds at those interval. It was also the where the velocity leveled off the most. Between those 2 charge weights it shot about a 0.6 MOA group with an ES of 29 and SD of 8.6. The average velocity was 2940.

I never got to a max charge or high pressure signs. So my only questions is, should I keep going for a higher node? Or is that proably near peak velocity for that round. I can post in the reloading thread if that's a better place to ask the question.

At 2940fps at my altitude (3500 ft) that's real close to 2000fps at 600yards and over 1500 ft lbs. That would work for a 600yd elk cartridge IMO. That's real close to where my load runs (2970) with 73gr of H4831.

Yeah, I'm good with the load but not hitting pressure signs has me wondering if I should go higher. I got up to about 3009 fps with 75.2 gr if IMR 7828 SSC.

I don't know if you're still wanting to experiment or are just honing in with the 180gr TTSX. If you're still experimenting, check out our 153gr Afterburner. It's perfect for what you're trying to accomplish and eliminates your extended range performance worries. In your 24" barrel, you should have no problem finding 3300 fps. If you're sticking with the 180gr TTSX, good luck on your hunt; I'm extremely jealous!

thanks for the recommendation, I might give them a try in the off season. I only have so many range days before this years hunt and need to work on the DOPE card.

I shoot 168gr TTSX in my 300 weatherby. It shoots lights out. The very first trial load shot sub .75 MOA so i didn't go further as this is a box stock Walmart weatherby Vanguard.

It hammered my cow elk last year, granted it was a short range shot. My buddy used his 308 win with 165gr TTSX on a cow at short range last year too, and his cow went DRT. Mine went about 40 yards.

Barnes…..hard bullet? Have shot coyotes out to near 400 yards with my elk rifle…. very dead coyote. A 250 grain TTSX, 3030 at lift off does a remarkable job on a coyote…..unless you want to save the pelt! memtb

They were all I shot for years, shot a lot of elk with them there are profoundly better choices now days. I still will shoot deer and coyotes with TTSX cause they open fast and blow through thin game, the 110 TTSX in a 270 WSM is still a favorite but on elk they won't shed frontal area to retain their momentum and they turn on a hard hit and they will some times just plow a small wound channel through on a lighter hit and not real cause the profound bleeding that really take an elk out fast, we actually carried 22lr pistols for dispatching elk.

Never said it wouldn't work for a Coyote, it would just not be my choice for a Coyote bullet, and I can think of many better for that!
