Which s/a 6.5?

I'm running a 130 Berger VLD on top of 38.3 grains of RL-15 (26" tube) with very good results. Have a ladder worked up w/ the 143 ELD-X and Varget too but the weather has been so crappy, I can't get to the range to test it!

107gr SMK over 42 grains of CFE 223 makes for around 3200fps and a laser beam of a trajectory to 500m. That's a match load, not a hunting load, due to bullet selection. The BC is compromised a little by the low weight so it's not the best load past that. For longer range jump to a heavier bullet.

Do you hand load? If so, the x47 case is really good, very nicely optimized. There's no real answer to what's best. It's what's best for your use case that's at

If not .260rem is a hell of a lot more available as is 6.5CM. They're all pretty much in the same basic performance boat, only small differences between them. Of note, a .260AI is basically a match for the 6.5PRC with the proper powder selection except it uses a .473" bolt face. A buddy of mine shoots a .260AI in competition. The thing is hard on targets. 2900fps+ with 140gr class bullets.

The 6.5PRC just doesn't seem like it's a great option for anything. 200fps over a 6.5CM for 50% more powder burned just makes a ton of extra recoil and blast for what is ballistically nothing. And by nothing I mean it. The difference in drop at 500yrds is about 4 inches. It's a great way to put to use a magnum bolt face short action that was built on something abusive in recoil like a .325WSM but IMO, that's all. It seems made to comply with match rules and to give just a little velocity edge to make for less wind drift variance for match shooters.
What about the 6.5-284, Lapaua Brass, 4831SC, 140ELD. GETS the job DONE as FAR OUT as you can SEE! Short action, NO recoil that's punishing or disruptive. I have a Brake on mine. I been HOOKED HARD on the 6-284 for 50 years, just stepped up to the 6.5-284. The 6.5-300 is also a VERY,VERY SWEET WILDCAT! Just my 2 cents.

Going with the 6.5x47. Anyone care to share some good recipes...at least favorite powders if nothing else..want to stay away from temp sensitive powders
This load has proven effective for both competition as well as medium game to 700 yards in two different rifles chambered in 6.5x47L. VERY temperature stabile!!

Actually, I'm of the opinion (that's all it is is an opinion) that 6.5-284 is one of the most overrated powder burners to make the fad list in the last decade and it comes in 2 distinct forms both of which qualify under that banner.

You can throat it 5 miles long and seat the bullets into the next county, then it's basically an underperforming 6.5 magnum in drag and really then needs to be in a standard/long action. In the true short action form it still eats 50+ grain powder charges and gives 45 grains of powder worth of performance. One can save 5 grains of powder and all the hassle of finding brass and get a nice improvement in barrel life by going to a .260AI and slower more modern powders like RL-23 in doses closer to 45 grains.

Respecting your opinion, I have over four dozen game animals and perhaps as many varmints, dispatched beteeen 500 and 1200 yards that might differ...if they could. If the 6.5x284 "Norma" and it's performance characteristics, well proven in competition and LRH, never existed, it's likely that the 260R, 6.5Magnum, and 264WM would still be obscure oddities, and the 6.5CM and PRC may not even exist. It continues to hold a top position for "serious" 6.5 LRH, likely accounting for more LR successes then then any of the one of the other 6.5 cartridges over the past several years. It will be here to stay for a long time! Just another viewpoint.

Getting all my parts accumulated to carry to gunsmith soon.
Looking for a low recoil 6.5 on rem short action.
Been looking hard at the 6.5x47 ..but recently the 6.5 Rsaum caught my attention.
Barrel life of lapua is appealing and factory brass.

Purpose..coyote out to 500 some occaisonal bambi

If you want the most performance out of a short action, its the SS or SST thats going to get you there. They were specifically designed for the short action and will outperform anything else at 2.9" coal. They have head stamped ADG brass as well as reamers and dies in stock.

i have two 260 rem and love the relaoding ease i have with both ! one is target sako other is rem 700 !

A 130 Berger hunting going 2950 fps out of my 6.5x47 is bad medicine for whitetail. I use H4350, CCI 450 and Lapua Brass. The 130 Accubond out of my other x47 works good to. Shorter barrel and it runs about 2850 fps. I use this one out of tree stands.
