Which cal for muledeer long range?

My ideal gun for that would be a 7mm STW with a 1:9 26-28" stainless/fluted barrel. Shooting 180 Bergers with Nosler brass.

That gun sounds oddly familiar......I just can't figure out why. :D:D:D

I love my 300 Jazz launching the 215's at 3100 but my next build will be a 8 or 9 pound 300 Win Mag throated for the 215's. It will be very similar to my 280 AI that I just built. The 300 Win Mag is such a versatile caliber.

I was thinking .300 WSM 26in. 1-10 shooting 215 hybrids. Thats just because I want one. Haha

Labeling it mule deer only makes for lots of good choices from .257 Weatherby-.378 Weatherby. I picture something light for carrying at altitude, which cuts off the higher end for me.

One of the short mags, 6.5-270-7mm. With the 7mm most likely, and a bullet 160-180 grains of good shape, and easy opening.

300 Norma be OK too:D

where I live, most mulies live in bear country. So I would go with something big enough to make a g-bear think twice. I would start with a 270 WSM and go up from there, ending around the .338 Lapua. The big cased .300s and .338s are a bit big, but come in handy for those long shots across blustery canyons.

For myself it is a 7mm Rem Mag, but I find myself carrying my .338 RUM just as much or more.

If you were to build a gun which caliber for muledeer only shooting from 400 to 1000 yards?
7mm STW on either a Montanna 1999 or Model 70 action, all stainless with a McMilian or Precision Stockworks Stock and probably a No. 3.5-4 contour Benchmark 28" Barrel fitted with either a Snowy Mountain Rifles or Northwest Precision Muzzle brake.

In the alternative the same thing in 300wm.

^^^This. Or one of the other big 300s. A fast .270 or 7mm wouldn't be bad either but I feel that the 300s give you a notable advantage in BC and power for those shots beyond 800 yards.
On deer sized game the extra power is a waste and that's coming from a guy with two 300 Rums.

You can easily kill deer at that range with the .260 Rem if you simply put it in the right spot.

There's a reason there are so many of the big 300's and 338's for sale cheap barely used for sale. Most people find it's far more gun than they need for their intended purpose and find the blast and or recoil to be more than they want to put up with.

Anyone considering one of the monster mags would really be well advised to find one they can shoot before blowing that much cash.

I went through this decision process several years ago for hunting the big bodied Alberta mule deer and whitetails. With more than a dozen taken from in that range window(farthest, 998 yards, I am completely satisfied with my 6.5x284 loaded eith 140 VLDs loaded at 2970 FPS.
