Was the 6.5 cm really a necessity?

I have never seen a hunting rifle shoot as well as my 6.5x47. I imagine that a CM would be fundamentally the same. I was not as pleased with my 260. I was a rookie hand loader when owned it. It also literally weighed 5lbs. Above is better than average group but not by much. I cannot even believe that I can shoot these groups. I am far from a competitive shooter.

I really am amazed by the accuracy of this cartridge. This is from a high quality 7lb hunting rifle. There has to be some level of inherent accuracy built into the 6.5x47 and likely the CM. Perhaps this is why these cartridges were needed in addition to the 260.

Groups like these are why I fell in love with my 260. Light recoil, accurate, long barrel life and plenty of energy for hunting anything from coyotes to elk.

I'm hoping to get results this good from my Creedmoor too.

I have to say, as much as I like Berger bullets, and the results I get from the Hornaday ELDx line (though I wish they showed more support for the 260 in their factory box ammunition), I'm still pretty fond of the tried and true Sierra Match Kings and Game Kings. Those bullets are just consistently excellent shooting bullets for my guns.

I had some trouble with finding a ringer load with the 130HVLD. I could not get it consistently under about .4". Other bullets have been much more forgiving. The 135 Classic Hunter was easy to get to group but I never got it moving much faster than 2700 FPS. My current hunting load is 38.1 gr. Varget, 120 Ballistic Tip, for 2900 fps. 23" barrel. Probably a little warm so not endorsing this load.

Obviously you have a heck of a rifle. What make and spec is it?

Thanks man! Believe it or not, it's a stock Savage model 12 LRP. I love the gun. It was my first real long-range rifle and it has always shot really well. It is not particularly fond of Remington box ammunition, but it was not hard to find a good load for it using sierra bullets.

I have put many rounds through this and I have actually contemplated the idea of rechamber it into a Winchester 284 when I decide to re-barrel it down the road. That is another one of my favorite rounds. My dad has a Winchester model 88 chambered in 284 Winchester and I have always liked it.

I think the 284 Winchester makes a ton of sense. I have shot a 280AI for years but think the 284 Win would service the same need.
