How does lapping rings damage the receiver finish?

In order to get a perfect match between the rail and the receiver you have to apply lapping compound and rub them together. You can never get a perfect mating by just working on one or the other.

Are y'all referring to lapping rings or removing material from the top of the receiver to square it up? Btw, I always bed my bases too...

Picatinny rails that are attached to the receiver to which the rings are then mounted.

Iv bedded a rail. But now find it easier to use a clear two pot glue. In the same manner. No release agent and they come off fine.
