Good day,

I wonder if you can help, I am venturing into the world of bushing dies and trying to extend my shooting range. I plan to order a set of Redding dies (body, bushing and seating comp dies) for my 300WSM and aim to reload and consistently as possible. I have found some questions I thought I would put to you chaps in terms of reloading sequence with the dies. I only use Norma or Lapua brass.

Process from what I understand is the following:

1.) fireform brass
2.) Resize with bushing die .001/2 reduction from a fired round.
3.) 3-4 reloads like this
4.) anneal brass
5.) using a fired piece of brass prior to anealing bump back shoulder 0.001/0.002 with the body die.
6.) Resize the neck with the neck bushing die.

Repeat process?

Would appreciate any assistance.

#2 should be .001-.002 less than the average of your loaded rounds. Depending on your chamber neck diameter, if you reduce fired neck of a case by .002", you may get zero tension on your bullet. Also, if you have a larger chamber neck, you may have to use an intermediate size bushing and another for your final size. I have found if you have to size necks down over .003", you can/will get inconsistent neck tensions. Redding says don't reduce more than .004" using one bushing. Measure a number of fired case neck diameters, add .001" to that average for your approximate chamber neck diameter. You will need a bushing 1 or 2 thou less than your loaded neck. Do the math to find how much your total neck reduction will be. Based on that, decide if the intermediate bushing will be needed. Good luck, I use only S type dies, but use pin gauges to check final inside diameters, as brass spring back will vary from case to case. Let your brass tell you how often to anneal.

This is a Redding Type S FL sizing bushing die for my 243. Sizes body and neck at same time.

I take a fired case, clean carbon off neck with fine steel wool. Brush inside of neck. Lube inside of neck if using expander.

Lube case, run into FL Type S bushing die. Bump shoulder back .002" The bushing will size almost all of the neck. Or only 1/2 of the neck, your choice. Bushing should be .002" less then the smallest loaded rounds neck diameter. Sizing the neck down more than .008" in one step may cause problems. The size stamp on Redding bushings should face down, towards the case mouth. This keeps the busing from getting crooked when it contacts the stop in the type S FL die.

I dont anneal brass. When brass doesnt spring back, i use a .001" smaller bushing. 18 loadings so far.

My bullet seater is a standard RCBS unit. Seems to work ok.

Thank you gents. I have ordered the body, neck and seating die. Will figure out the bushings once its here.

Wanted to ask, do I need to turn necks on norma or lapua brass?
