Debating if I should get a Remington 700 SPS and add a stock and trigger.

Can you post your 700 with standard (not heavy) barrel and share its performance at the range?

sorry, I put a #5 Shilen on my lh bdl and ditched the wood for laminate so I am not of much use to you... it did make a good stick out of her though...

I have a 700 LSS which is basically an SPS with a laminated wood stock. I pillar bedded it and gave it a trigger job. It would shoot around 1.5" for the most part. I tried everything with that gun trying to make it shoot, and the only thing that worked was painstaking attention to detail with my reloads. I neck turned, sorted, used the best dies available, and sorted the ammo by concentricity. The best ammo (.002" runout or less) would shoot .5 MOA. Stuff with .003-.005 would give me fliers, and .005+ would scatter a group at 1.25-1.50. Keep in mind that factory ammo usually has .005-.012 of runout. I finally got tired of it being so picky so I rebarreled her and now she's happily shooting under 1/2 moa without sorting the reloads.

Some factory barrels will shoot well with the right loads, some won't. It's luck of the draw.

Hmmmm. Not a bad idea b/c you can always true the action and rebarrel so it'll never be a total loss. There are plenty of guys here to help, what is your objective and your budget?

Wow.... you are off base.
The LSS has a jeweled bolt and a finished barrel. It's not rough as a cob.... never mind the fact hat it costs about 950-1050 new...

I have had my fair share of Remington gold... and crap. right now I'm waiting on my M700 CDL SF to come back as a #5 contour Brux 280 AI.. with an 8 twist... I may/may not want to play with the 195s. I know @ 26 inches this should be a beast.
AT 24 with my Nosler m48, my ai pushes a 180 to 3/4moa @ 2880fps... 7977 is the powder of choice.

A few years back, I bought a Mod 700 SPS SS in 300 RUM. I had it pillar bedded, Shilen trigger added and crown redone muzzle braked. I firelapped it for the break in with 20rds of NECO bullets (5 medium grit, the rest polish) and it was a shooter! Get this, I found some Nosler Custom 180PT ammo on sale, so bought a 100rds. I had my Leupold 4.5x14AO fitted with a CDC dial and it would dial out to 900 with the mounts I had (Leupold Dovetail rings, medium) I could easily hold to .5MOA, sometimes less off the bench. Then I turned around and sold it as I knew I would never shoot anything that far away, I would have to go get it then! ha, I'm just getting "older" and fatter and more bionic at 62. Long story short, If you are willing to put some more money in into it, it may work fine for you. good luck.

Mine is a CDL SF in 7mm Mag. It is 100% stock (even the god awful XMark Pro Trigger). My load is a 162 Amax w/ 59.5 gr. IMR4350. It consistently shoots under an inch at 200 yards. my best group to date is .65 at 200. I want to upgrade the stock but its hard to change anything on this rifle since it shoots so well. I have never had a Remington shoot so well out of the box without bedding or some kind of investment outside of the initial buy.

First shots after truing and crowning, but before bedding, I believe...I was marking the targets as I did the work and this one doesn't say "bedded." Shot 3 was a called shot, 5 sat in a hot chamber too long when the wind picked up. I could only find 87gr Hornady Custom Lite and not regular Custom ammo in time for this project, so I am anxious to try handloads with 85gr GameKings.

I did what you are saying, put a B&C sporter stock on it and a Timney trigger. Shoots well with hand loads. Sub MOA. I think I would put my money on a new barrel before doing all the upgrades if I were to do it over. I can modify a synthetic to make it pretty stiff and the X-Mark Pro isn't too bad of a trigger once it gets a job from the smith.

Mine is a stock BDL of 1970 vintage with a Canjar trigger added in '84. Custom stock was done at the same time.

Consistent Sub-MOA out to 500 yards in 25-06 with 120 Speer BTSP, 110 AB or 117 SGK's and I4831, $L-19 and I7828ssc respectively.
