I think it was a spinal shot too. we didn't gut him, just quartered him. When we got over to him, he could throw his head around but couldn't use his legs. We put a .40 in him to finish him off.

No question a spine shot/miss to some. Why would you not check to see where she just hit an elk/animal with a totally unknown rifle at a distance it would appear you and her were not set up to perform on your own? Surprises me you did not know where the first shot hit it.
