6.5 prc for elk?

What do you guys think? I'm going back and forth between building a 300 wsm or a 6.5 prc barrel for my impact action. Do we think the 6.5 prc is a little light for elk no. I would plan to load either the terminal ascent round or a Nosler ablr.

I think it's more than adequate but I'd personally take a 300 wsm if it was me. I own both calibers and there's no replacement for displacement. I've never killed an elk so I'm not one to say what to use. But I believe the 300 wsm can do what the 6.5 prc can do and more. But at the end of the day, tote the one you can shoot best. My 300 wsm suppressed is light on recoil and my son who's 13 shots it just fine on the range.

I'm in to hear the opinions of people who've never killed an elk. Most responses will be people who've never even seen one.

My wife killed her very first big game animal, a moose, with a .264 WM….pretty close to a ballistic twin to the 6.5 PRC.

She's killed lots of stuff with several different cartridges, however for the past 30 years has hunted with only one cartridge……larger than the .264/6.5 calibers! memtb

That's the only thing I can think about is I'd rather shoot something with more energy on it. The goal is to take a shot inside of 600 yards. I'm sure both will work but the 300 will do it better I think. I think the 11 lb build I'm planning with a suppressor will recoil just fine. I'm not worried about the recoil but I like your train of thought for sure thank you

You like the extra horsepower from the heavier bullets right? I was looking at loading the 190 gr ablr or a 200 gr eldx around 2800+ out of a 22 in tube. What do you think?

You know man I've seen people kill big bulls with single shots at distance with phenomenal shot placement so part of me thinks go ahead and take a 6.5 prc cause it has less recoil which is always nice. But I also like the idea of just having a heavier bullet with a larger bullet diameter you know.

But I'd split the distance and get a 7 mag, or 7 PRC.

Branden, I "never" rely on a "surgically" placed bullet! Nor, do I want to take a big game animal at extreme ranges……though, it can be done "most" of the time with regularity.

I've got a fair amount of kills with both calibers… the past few years I've helped a few farms with nuisance permits on deer and the 300 wsm definitely puts
It to em more violently vs the 6.5 prc.

1000% I wish I could kill everything as close as humanly possible. Less of a pack out for me but I agree cartridge insurance is where it's at buddy.

Gotta keep it in a short action lol sold a 300 wm to fund my prs hobby so now I have an impact 737 r action so I just wanna Go to a Short action magnum. Trying to keep the gun collection lean
