Just looking for some opinions on how much speed is necessary for this bullet.
Current load for 300 win is 70.5 h4831 in nosler brass. It will probably chrono 2750-2780. It's shooting 1" or less at 200m.
I feel comfortable out to 600, but expect shots at elk to be 400 or less.
Should I look for a faster load?
BTW. The 212 eld x would not shoot better than 1 moa no matter what powder or seating depth I tried.

That will work great with that bullet. Speed is not everything. Great accuracy is much more important, especially at distance. You can double ck w/ Broz who has more experience with that bullet than anyone else I know, but I'm sure it will work perfectly for you. Just be sure that the tips are not plugged. Bruce

Have you tried H1000 In this rifle ? There are a lot of people having great accuracy and considerably higher velocity than what your getting with this powder. I settled on a load of of H1000 that chronos 2939 out of a 26 inches tube with fantastic accuracy. If you are happy with your velocity, and it sounds like your accuracy is good, then stick with the load you have. If your looking for more performance try the H1000.

I've tried a few loads with h1000 and it showed some promise. I'm very happy with any honest 1/2 moa gun shooting this bullet. What's your load w/h1000? I've only tried 74.5 and 76. 74.5 shot a perfect triangle about 2.25". I'll bring the chrono to the range next time to confirm the velocities.
Thank you for all the responses.

Crunch a trajectory/velocity/energy program for your rifle with the 215 using your conditions then compare what Broz did with his rifle. Broz mentions distance, impact velocity and energy for all those kills PLUS entrance and exit pictures with commentary on the performance. I am certain you will find that the 215 will work fine with your slightly slower velocities.

The elk killing with data begins on page 14 linked here:

I've only tried the 215s in one rifle but I've used 208 Hornadys in several guns with H1000. I have found 2 different accuracy nodes: The high node is between 76 and 78 grains, with most guns liking between 76.8 and 78.0. Velocity is usually 2900-2975. The other node is down around 73-74 grains and ~2750 fps. 3 of the 6 rifles I've loaded for like the 78.0 grain load, one likes 76.8, and one 76.0. The last rifle has a tighter bore and shows pressure signs with 78.0 grains, even though this load is very accurate. With this gun I just load down to 74.0 grains and she's happy.

Your load of H4831 might give you over 2800 fps out of a 26" barrel. I would use that load if I were in your shoes.

I am using 74.0 grains of H1000 with the 215, and getting 2749 avg. fps, and 0.28" groups at 100 yds. I realize this is the low node, but with that accuracy I'm staying right here! A couple more clicks is all it takes.

You will be fine. I am shooting the berger 215 @2800 So we are close to the same speeds. Shot a cow elk @336 with a complete pass through. I also shot a deer @ 619 entered good and took out the should on the far side. This shot passed through at a angle and the bullet was blown to pieces when it struck the bone.

Hope this helps.

You have all the velocity you need at 2750.

I believe Berger recommends 1,800fps for expansion for most of their bullets. If you are getting 2750fps, that gives you an effective range to ~850 yards.

As others have mentioned, accuracy is more important than velocity.

Personally, I am getting 2865fps from 76.8 grains of H1000 with hBN coated bullets. I took at elk at 388 yards last fall.

Took the chrono to the range today. The load registered @2688. Not sure that's correct because it was having issues. I load them long coal 3.688, but I didn't expect that from a 26" tube. Also, 77.5 h1000 shot 1.3 at 200m. That registered 2860.

One thing to keep in mind. A accurate load is better then a fast load. Are you looking for load that is a MOA or better load? One thing you can try is take and just tweek the charge weight in till it gets better. How close to the lands are you now?
