7mm-08 the forgotten 6.5 Creed Killer?

I had a Model 700 BDL from the Remington Custom Shop in 7mm-08 AI. 24" barrel with a Zeiss scope. Best shooting hunting rifle I have ever owned. I was fire forming brass one day and someone had left some playing cards on the 200 yard boards. I remember hitting diamonds on every shot. I can kick myself for letting that rifle go. We live and we learn.
I was born in that part of PA. which is famous for the expression: "too soon we grow old and too late smart." worth remembering.

Are we still b*tching and moaning about the Creedmoor? Show us where the new cartridge touched you and you feel offended. This gets so stupid.

I have two 7mm-08s, two 6.5mm Creedmoors, and two 6mm Creedmoors. They are all awesome. Why the heck do people get all whiney over Creedmoors. It is just a freaking cartridge. Get over it. It is a container that holds powder and a bullet. Do you get all weepy when someone uses a different size Tupperware to carry their leftovers in too?

I have 2 7-08s and 3 6.5 CMs, they are 2 of my favorite 3 cartridges (6.5x284 the other), if their is an advantage to either it would be the heavier bullet option for the 7-08 but that also comes with more recoil. In the 140gr class, the 6.5 CM is a tough to beat combination of light recoil, high retained down range energy/speed, and sectional density. I love both cartridges and I'm not trying to sound like a 6.5 CM band wagoner. Both are great deer cartridges.
Sockeye66,I'm with you with regard to Creedmoor, mine is 6mm Creedmoor and my 6.5x284 I would not be without its long range accuracy is formidable.

I think you are the only one getting touchy feely, emotional over this thread. Just a point of order.

I bought a 700 sps in 7mm08 of a kid hard up for cash for $275 about 5 yrs ago. Never having a 7-08 I decided it was going to be my first suppressed rig. The gun just flat out impresses me every time I take it out! Shooting factory Hornady American Whitetail non the less. From my daughter taking her first deer at 5yr old, to my first mule deer, to dropping a doe here in PA 3 days ago 330yds. I attended the Bobby Hart shooting school w/ this setup and swapped scopes while there to get me out to 700yds. Like stated before, if I would have had this gun 20 yrs Go I wouldn't have nearly the collection I get yelled at for.

Now I do have 3 7mm08's, and I have 3 CM's, I've been impressed w/ my CM's on woodchuck and such, but when I'm hitting the woods, the 7mm08 has just become my ballistic soul mate.

*I swapped the synthetic SPS stock for a 70's BDL between these pics*

I think the biggest thing holding the 7-08 back is its age and lack of cool factor modern marketing has afforded the CM. For a mid range hunting cartridge its statistically hard to beat when considering the spectrum of what makes a good cartridge. I've had one for 5+ years as well as a .260, taken multiple whitetail with both. Heavy lean for me to the 7-08.

The 7-08 enjoys tremendous barrel life
Lapua brass along with all the other top brands
Ridiculously broad bullet selection
Effectively uses a broad range of proven powders

After trying all the whiz bang expensive bullets, I settled on the tried and true Nosler 150gr Ballistic Tip Hunting. I can reliably take it to 1000yds on steel and feel very confident in a hunting situation to about half that distance. At 7-08 speeds the 150 NBT has really shined for me. I know its not scientific and likely just a run of luck, but multiple whitetail have all been DRT from this gun. All have been complete pass through with significant internal damage.

I built my brother a 7mm-08 twenty years ago and since that time that is all he carried. He has shot so many critters with that 7mm-08 you couldn't count them all.... All DRT! I built myself one a year or so after his and it is one of my favorite rifles. It seems to have the right velocity range for most lead core bullets to perform their best. His is an 11 twist Shilen so it loves the 120g Sierra bullets. I shoot the 140's since my Krieger is a 10 twist. Neither of us would be caught without our 7-08's. Love em'

Bought a nearly new Savage 11 from a buddy because the barrel was a shotgun for pattern, Have a 7mm08 barrel on order from Shilen: love those quick barrel swaps. Have a Shilen 243 on it to shoot some now. Put a rail on and plastic bottom metal to hold the magazine in the Hogue stock (for a heavy barrel). Looks good, feel certain it will be a player.
