7mm-08 the forgotten 6.5 Creed Killer?

The 7mm-08 is a great round that offers very little recoil and great ballistics within its limits. I know this is a long range hunting forum but my brother dropped this little 13 pointer dead on its tracks, using a 140 Remington Core-Lokt round at 288 yards. He first spotted him Wednesday late in the evening at around 375 yards and as he was closing the gap it just got too dark to shoot it so he opted for the following morning. Got up early next morning just before sun up and walked a mile from where he had seen him and waited for sun up, well the rest is history. I personally have been using core-lot ammo for hunt for over 50 years, just an old dog that won't change what is reliable, even if there is better ammo out there.

And for those who need it
I had a 6.5 Creedmore built for my granddaughter, it is a good round with mild recoil but there is a price to pay in performance, my grandson and I both shoot 260 AI - Schneider barrels, 1/8 twist , Stiller Predator actions and McMillan stocks. 129 grain Nosler Accubonds are killer good combo with 50 grains of H1000. The bottom line is we just like guns and lots of caliber combos.

AR-10 with a 7mm08 barrel would be fine and easy to do IF you have a gunsmith or a lathe and a drill press (for the gas port)

The 7mm-08 will surprise you as, a serious, Elk or, Moose, Cartridge using, the 168 grain, H-VLD Berger's, W/ a near Max load of, StaBall !
My son is getting, 2,765 FPS out of his 22.4" Tikka with, this Load and at around 400 yards or so, IT, "catches up" to my .270 WSM for, Killing Power,.. WHO,.. KNEW ??
Yes, he has to "Dial" a few more Clicks on his Scope than, I do but, I was thoroughly impressed when, we shot, L R Steel Targets, together !
The recoil, is pretty stout, in his 7.5 Pound Rifle but, it's an, AMAZING, Hard hitting, Round with, THIS Load !
Plug 2,765 FPS and this Bullet ( .618 G-1 BC ), into Berger's "Calculator" to be, IMPRESSED with, the 500, 600, and 700 Yard Velocities and the "Retained, Energy" at, 5,500 ft. Elev. where we Hunt Elk. He shot, a Nice 5x6 Bull at 247 yards with, a 150 grain Horn ELD-X Bullet but, was NOT impressed with it's performance on that, Elk ( it took, a "Follow up" shot ) so he wanted, a New, more "Explosive" and heavier, Bullet.
I'd NEVER feel, under gunned with, the 7mm-08 IF, loaded,.. properly.
Just ran a comparison on your son's 7-08 load just to see if it would be a CM killer. Very impressive. Since this is a pretty hot load, I compared it to my 6.5 CM/156gr EOL hunting load @ 2770 fps from a 22" barrel, 7 lb rifle, so very similar. At all distances out to 1000 yards the energy is virtually identical with the only, insignificant difference, is about 20" more drop at 1000 yards from the 7mm. When comparing the 7-08 to my 270 WSM/170 EOL @ 3050 fps they are quite far apart but understand if limited to 1:10 twist rate. I really appreciate maximizing cartridge performance and comparing notes and experiences.
On a side note there is no better experience then spending time hunting with with our kids and grandkids. Just went on an elk hunt with my son. We spent 3 days packing out a nice bull. We were as exhausted as we have ever been but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. Great paydays

Ok, 73driver -- I'll bite. why is the 7X57 not popular? ( it is with me.)
I'm curious, epoletna, as to what kind of stats you get with your 7x57. I traded mine for a 7mm Rm Mag in 1975, and haven't had one since. The best powder then was IMR4350, and I maxed out at 2600 fps with 160 gr Sierra SPBT in a 22" bbl. Today's powders, especially the RL numbers, appear to be great improvements.

It appears that with so much craze in the CM coolaid, the only thing I can find is a barrel from a couple of places, I would have to build it myself. I will wait untill things return to somekind of normal...
But I bet it would be so much fun in an AR platform!
More funner (lol) ... in a M14/M1A platform....

If you don't mind sharing what scope does He run?I just bought a tikka super light in 7mm-08 trying to keep it lightweight for a Mtn rifle 7.5 lbs is awesome!
We both use, 4.5 X 14 Burris scopes with, the older, Ballistic Plex and make our own "Dials" calibrated every 25 Yards to 725 yards ( one full Turn on mine ) But I'm shooting a .270 WSM with 140's going 3,185 FPS. I don't remember how much my son's Max is ( he Dials to 650ish IIRC, w/ One Turn ) We both, "Zero" at, 200 Yards. His Tikka T-3, Super Lite, weigh's under 7.5 Pounds with, this Scope and DNZ one piece, Mounts.
Some of, the 4x14 and 3x18 Leupolds, are NICE, and light, too,.. And "Dial" very well. (YES, watch the Weight of Scope ! )
Burris now makes, "Custom Dials" for their Scopes at,..BurrisOptics.com/ballistic's then go to, CustomKnobs. @ $50. each

The 7mm-08 was originally developed by and for NRA High Power Silhouette shooting. When shooters had trouble knocking down the steel Rams at 500m they came up with a solution, the 7mm-08. It offered a flatter trajectory that resulted in a a more direct hit.

I think it was thought more as a shooting than a hunting cartridge. The biggest issue is ammo manufacturers hold it back with only loading between 120gr to 140gr bullets, there might be a 150gr load out there but not sure.

Killed my first mulie wth it in 1985 at age 9 with a 160gr Partition and my first coues that same year with a 140gr Gameking.

Definitely my favorite cartridge, still use it to this day and don't plan on changing that anytime soon.

Killed my first buck Nov 22 -1963 with the 6.5x55 -1-7.5 twist 16 in carbine 139 gr Norma it took a long time too catch on in the form of a Creed remember what happened on that day?
Been shooting the Swede for 3 decades
Never saw the need for anything else
Unless is a heavy hitter short range like
45-70/444 for hills and hollers of the
Appalachian mountains
