I'm new to reloading. I have a Cooper firearms 28 nosler long range with a proof research barrel . I'll be hunting deer or pronghorn . I'm leaning towards the Barns 145 grain I have a reloading book and brass coming in a few days what powder do you start with or primer seems like there are a lot of things to consider I was just hoping to save some money and start with a powder that works instead of buying powder and finding out it's the wrong one.
Thanks for any advice.

I can't help you on a powder. But don't over look the Hammer line of bullets. There's guys running the 143 Hammer Hunter at 3500 FPS out of 28 Noslers with great results. The Berger could serve you good as well. Really depends how you hunt and shot distance. If your shots are not often over say 700 yds, I think the Hammer line will serve you well. As long as your barrel has the twist for the mono bullets.

What twist rate?
I have a 1:8 twist proof in rem mag. Have very good load with the 180berger and h1000. And just developing a good load with 197smk and retumbo

In my 28 I have run H-1000, Retumbo and RL 33 with good success. As for bullets I don't play with that light of a bullet. I can look in my berger or Hornady book for powders uses for lighter bullets if you'd like.
Bullets I have used 169 Hammer Hunter, 180 Berger Hybrid. Both shot under .4 with no development, just load seated .02 off the lands and shot them. Results were good and hunting season was close so I ran with it. I will do more load development now that life is slower.
Primer I use the 215M.

I bought the gun for primarily pronghorn I just dont think I need that heavy of a bullet that's why I was thinking of 145.

If you want those lighter bullets I know Hammer makes a 155 and 143 Hammer Hunter. Berger makes a 140 grain bullet and 150 bullet. I guess you would just need to decide if you want a copper or lead bullet. I cant recommend a Barnes bullet so I will leave that to you. I think at the speeds those light bullets will be flying I would prefer a copper bullet. The copper should hold together nicely and still put a whoopin on the speed goat.

If you can find N570 it picked up 100fps over the other powders that we have used in the 28n and the bullets weights you are talking about.

Twist rate of your barrel will dictate how heavy you can run. Whether you should choose to run one of our Hammer Bullets or another mono I would recommend a higher than min twist for best performance.

I have a 1:8 twist

Unless u hit nerves, a Barnes that fast on a goat will be underwhelming performance wise
I had to pass on a buck 2 years ago I got within 560 and a coyote spooked him never seen him again . Just wanted something that I could reach out and hit my target at further range . I have no problem hitting a gong at 400 yards so I'm confident if I find a longer range I'll be able to hit out at further distance. So do you think I should go to a heavier bullet? I want to use the long range bullet .

Figured I should run some numbers and make sure I was correct.

So a 4000' elev and standard atmosphere the max point blank range is 446y and it would be 10.4" low at 500y. Yep hold hair out to 500y.

You figure 3600 FPS with a 143 is possible? Seems pretty fast to me but I don't shoot the lights either.
