6.5 PRC or 6.5 SAUM?

My vote is for the 6.5 PRC. I love the 6.5 SAUM too, but the PRC is here to stay. The SAUM will be about 50fps faster than the PRC with the same powder. I feel like the SAUM will always be up and down in the market as far as support for it goes. It's a great round, but if you can't get brass for it, it's no good to you. The PRC has Hornady backing it, they always do a good job of supporting their cartridges and other popular rounds.

I have a lot of trouble with hornsby brass

I strictly reload as well and went with the SAUM. I throated it long to maximize case capacity and am glad I did. The SAUM and PRC are so close together that it basically a wash. The PRC is Hornady's way of bringing their SAUM to market.

If you want factory ammo as an option, buy PRC.
If you want speed, go SAUM.
If you want to shoot the heaviest bullets out there, go SAUM or even WSM.

My Norma cases are doing great! I bought 200 cases when I built the gun and I have no idea when I'll wear out the first 100. Even planning to build a 7 SAUM to use the second set of 100.

"Use 7 Saum"

Then you don't have correct head stamped brass. Not a factor for some but it is with me after having lots of wildcats, more trouble than I personally want to deal with. Another reason I would choose PRC

I use Hornady brass it works fine although not as good as other brass. Two issues with Hornady,if you push it to pressure limits it doesn't last, and if you weight sort you will only get around 50-60 pieces with a grain of each other out of 100.

Both cartridges are fine it's just what you want to deal with.

I have a SAUM using 143ELDX (Norma brass) at 3019FT at the muzzle, 24 inch barrel. The thing fires darts, and drops whatever I have shot in its tracks. Its a lot of fun to shoot. I had it made specifically to take on a upcoming elk hunt.

I could defiantly see that having head stamped brass as being important if you have lots of similar wildcats. I only have a few. I am liking the wild catting especially if its as easy as necking down a 7 SAUM to a 6.5. Did a 6mm Dasher and it was a lot more work but fun. That amount of work would be required on a Sherman Short mag as well and that along with custom die costs keeps me out of that circle.

My 6.5 SAUM has a 28" barrel and shoots the 140 grain bullets over 3200 fps and has a bit more left in it. I'm considering cutting 2" off the end.

I'm looking into the saum, what yardage are guys taking elk comfortably? I understand this is somewhat of a loaded question for some, but I'm hoping to get answers from guys that have actually seen the results... I dont own a 6.5 currently. I normally hunt with the ultras and an edge.

My Elk hunt is scheduled for mid October. My SAUM has only seen white tail and aoudad action to date.

My 6.5GAP4's. ( SAUM) has taking elk drt at 550 so far . I would be without a doubt comfortable and confident at longer ranges taking an elk. I have taking my rifle out to 915 consistently. I won't shoot critters at distances I haven't practiced at. I have read of reputable others take elk drt past 1000 with the SAUM . I know my gun can do it. I know my bullet and Cartridge are more than capable. I am just the dummy behind the gun that needs more practice.
