Thinking of going 6.5 PRC thoughts

The article I read stated the Hornady factory ammo for the PRC with 143gr eld-x was loaded to 2.96 OAL. So if I where to build this rifle I would want a mag able to accept 2.99 or more to give some breathing room and be sure I can run the longest bullets out there.

The Wyatts box will do 2.995 and realistically that's probably a better setup for a hunting rifle, but the detachable mag looks cool!
The 6.5 Sherman Short has 50 FPS on the 6.5 PRC and uses standard magazines.

The 264win mag has more capacity. Loaded at the same pressures, the 264 win mag will out run the prc.

I would love to go 6.5 SS but I don't know if I'm willing to spend $2.50 a piece for brass and $275 for a set of dies. And the biggest crutch with the SS is no factory ammo if in a pinch.
I was temporarily interested in the SS. That's the exact reason why I decided against it. Just not willing to pay 2.50 a piece for brass. The dies didnt bother me so much as that's a one time deal. The SS is THE best short action line out there IMO. I just cant justify the extra cost to gain a couple hundred fps that I'll never notice at my typical ranges I shoot.

Try shooting a 7mm STW for the last 16 years... You priced Nosler brass lately? Roughly $3.20 each.

While I understand the expense can be overwhelming (trust me, of all people, I know), but $2.50 each for brass really isn't that bad. Especially for properly head stamped wildcat brass. And high-quality brass at that.

I just paid 80 cents a piece for some Peterson and ADG 6.5 cm brass. Was not a very big fan of the ADG(which is what the new headstamped ss brass is), but the Peterson brass is awesome. 80 cents to 2.50 is a big change for me. Not saying it's not a bad price, just not something I'm used to seeing.

Its already a HUGE success. The only ones trashing it already have their favorite and everyone knows on these forums, whatever you own is THE BEST.

The PRC is growing as fast as the ammo becomes available. marketing by Hornady will assure its success continues. Rifle builders, custom and factory are cranking them out fast as they can.

When will Barrett chamber the Fieldcraft in it???
So did the 6.8spc, 6.5L, .260 Rem, 7mm-05 and 6.5CM.

What is the wait time on that collapsible stock? And if you don't mind what is the cost of those, I looked and couldn't find it on their website.

Several months, weight (not sure), probably in the mid $8pp range for the elite fill option.
Stock can be google searched but hasn't made it on the site yet. Best to call.

6.5 SS:
200 pieces of new brass -$500
Die Set -$275
3ea AICS pattern WSM compatible 3rd magazines -$190

6.5 PRC:
200 pieces of new brass -$170
Die set (micrometer seater) -$71
3ea AICS pattern WSM compatible 3rd Magazines-$190

Both cartridges will require the same magazines since they're both based on a large diameter case, so that doesn't make a difference. Both of the AICS pattern WSM compatible magazines I'm familiar with allow an internal OAL of at least 2.950" so the SS doesn't have an advantage there. 50fps isn't enough of a difference to the average shooter to warrant the additional cost. That's not even getting into the fact that a guy can buy 200 rounds of LOADED 6.5 PRC ammo for less than the cost of 200 pieces of 6.5 SS brass.

And my 6.5 Badger will beat that by 100 fps with a 160gr bullet from the same length action. I don't know why anyone would slum it with a dog like the 264 Win Mag.

Comparing the performance of a short action cartridge to a long action cartridge is like comparing a V-6 Chevy Colorado to a Silverado 3500 Duramax. Two different products designed for two different uses. Both perform adequately for the intended purpose.

Someone wanted to see numbers so I posted mine. I don't care if your wildcat can beat my 264WinMag. I'm sure a 6.5x300wby and a 26 Nosler can out run it to. As far as comparing a 264 to a GM product don't. GMs suck lol

The point is that the 264 Win isn't anything special compared to other cases designed to fit in a long action. People keep comparing the factory loaded 6.5 PRC to the wildcat (or proprietary if you'd prefer) 6.5 SS in a short action. That's the same as me comparing the 264 Win Mag to a wildcat 6.5 chambering in a long action. Comparing the performance of a 264 Win Mag from a long action to the performance of a 6.5 PRC from a short action isn't a meaningful comparison.

Maybe you missed the part where someone asked people to post some numbers with a 264? That's all I was doing. Yeah there's cartridges that'll out run it. But for a long range hunting 6.5mm it's about the perfect choice for great performance and decent barrel life. Especially when compared to bigger cartridges such as the 26 Nosler,6.5x300wby and that super Magnum you have. Outta curiosity how many rounds before the barrel is cooked in your 6.5Badger??
