Tilly gets it Again!

Tilly sounds like she has some bark on her. You should team her up with a young feral hog, raised from a piglet around Tilly; I'm assuming you're in the country, low-lying land with water nearby. My money would be on copperheads or cottonmouths. Good luck; hope Tilly gets better. Cheer's

Y'all my puppy "Tilly" got bit again this morning by a snake. Second time in two weeks. I have no idea what kind of snake it was. She was outside. It got her on her right front paw. I didn't know a thing until she came back in the door I had left open for her. She came in wining, obviously in pain, with the paw up. I saw the fang marks on her paw.
I decided no vet this time. Wouldn't have mattered anyway because there's no vet open close to here on the weekend. I gave her Benadryl, prednisone, and Gabapentin for the pain. I started her back on her antibiotic and gave her all the Gatorade she wanted, which wasn't much. Then just made sure she was cool and comfortable. For two hours she slept. The meds obviously made her sleepy but I could tell she was fighting the poison as well. I kept an eye on her breathing. About 3 hours in I decided to prep a deer loin for vacuum sealing just to see if she would get up. She loves the trimmings from that. She was at my feet in less than 2 minutes. She got a good helping of that raw meat and I gave her some half and half to drink. She's still swollen. The skin on the foot split at one of the the fang marks. Her face and nose are also swollen but not as bad as it was earlier. She chased a squirrel late this afternoon, albeit a bit slower. I hope this time she learns her lesson. But somehow I doubt it.

I guess a person doesn't go out in bare feet around your yard.....knee high leather boots have gotta be annoying in Summer....I would think!

I generally do go barefoot. Or wear crocks. I just take a light at night. In the flowers or thick edge of the yard it's a different story.

Yessir. A whopping 36 ft above sea level. We have rattlesnakes also. They don't seem to like my yard so much. But I've killed rattlesnakes within 75 yards of the house.

She's much better today. The wounds on the foot are open but clean. She's still a bit swollen in the foot and face. But she's been out chasing stuff this morning. I may have just seen a lightbulb come on. A large skink flushed from under a branch in front of her. She made two strides toward it, then pulled up. Last week she would have treed him. Just maybe

Yeah, I've found that rattlers here, east side of the Cascades, kind of shy away from the houses that are occupied for the most part; I've found them more on the borderline of the property, unless you have small rodents near the house. Well, good luck. Cheer's

She is a hard headed little thing. My Chesapeake Bay Retreiver was like that. I think I shocked my last dog 2 times in 13 years with the e collar. So infrequently we finally took it off. You can shock or page Tilly while she's trying to steal a shoe. She will drop it, then pick it up again when you look away. I think we had 5 repeats of that in less than 5 minutes. Hardheaded, just like my wife! But I can't get my wife to keep the collar on. She says I'm the one that needs the collar! I wouldn't dare give her an opportunity like that!

Thank you sir. Yessir rattlers here for the most part are a bit shy and non confrontational. But you sure don't want to step on one or try to play with them! Dog pens seem to be a draw for them. I don't keep Tilly in a pen. We have a GPS E-Fence that gives her an acre to roam.

They are in the Lizard family! We have more of the Five Lined version. They are harmless.

It's like my grandpa said about any injured animal, "Aw, she'll be alright."
