I'm starting to plan the next project and I was set on a 300wm for elk and back up for mule deer. Hoping for 7.5-8lbs before scope. Planning on manners EH1, and leaning towards a Bartlein #3.

It's a long process for me to build a gun last one took over 2 years of buying one piece at a time. It gives me the fun of obsessing about each part and buying the right one.

Anyways. I am starting to consider a 300 Norma over the Winchester. It will be replacing a 300h&h, and besides the price of brass up front is there any downside? I would handload 100% for either. I was going to order a defiance deviant or surgeon, but leaning towards the deviant hunter.

I believe a 300 Norma Mag needs a barrel with a 1.300" diameter breech end and a 1.125" tenon thread diameter. I also think the bolt needs to be larger than .700". Your choice of parts is going to make those things difficult.

If you are just wanting something different than a 300 Winchester, I think a 308 Norma is the best 30 caliber belted magnum in existence.

I've had the RUM and 30-378 I ended up sending both down the road for one reason or another. I was just wondering about the 300Norma since it was about 10gr less then the Rum

Myself and a friend did builds similar to what you are wanting a few years ago. His is on a EH1, Stiller action, Brux #3 at 26", Holland brake, NF NXS. Finished at just under 10 lbs complete. Shoots incredible with 215 Bergers right at 3000 fps. I don't think you could go wrong with this combo. We were a little worried about the barrel whipping because of the light contour. This was dismissed very soon after the first three shots. Load development for both rifles was right around 15 shots!

We recently did a build for a customer on the 300 Norma. We did a 40* shoulder improvement on the cartridge. Weather you leave it alone of do what we did I think the cartridge is very impressive. Shorter than the RUM so easier to deal with longer bullets and mag feeding. Our improved version is running very close to RUM performance with about 10g less powder. It is proportionally very much like the WSM case giving the advantages in efficiency but not limited to the short action. After doing this build we are planning reamers on this same design from 6.5mm to .338. Maybe even a .375.

Yes you will need to order your action with the Lapua bolt face to run the Norma.

As a second guess goes, I think this is a good one. I recommend the Norma.
