Retumbo or H1000 for 300 PRC

It's a 26" barrel plus break. 1:10 twist. Mainly used for hunting but playing some with shooting steel out to 1000 yds. I thought about trying Berger's as well. Depending on how eldx's do.
It's gonna be tough getting the big heavies to stabilize in a 10tw. Thankfully you have a 26" barrel because a lot of manufacturers slap a 24" on the 300prc and that hobbled the cartridge right out of the box. I'd save the H1000 for the 180's or something WSM flavored.
My top 3 powders for the 220gr+ bullets are.

RL26
Ramshot magnum
N570...but its dirty

So to answer your question out of the 2 you mentioned I'd start with retumbo.

What kinda velocities with which bullets are y'all getting. Curious because I've got an 8lber of 26 I'm wanting to purpose
76gr of RL26 behind a 230 Atip gets me 2915fps with an ES of 6 in fire formed Lapua brass. This load is warm-ish! I started at 73gr and worked up .3gr. 76.6gr of RL26 is where I stopped and backed it back down to 76gr where I had a happy node and was running over 2900fps. As always....results may vary and be careful.

N570 under a 230 Hyb in a 24" 1:9" got me 2835fps into tiny groups with single digit ES. And the barrel onlybhas 50ish rounds down it. So I expect to see another 50fps as it continues to break in.

I won't use RL26 in a rifle that will see hunting/shooting in temps above 85°. It does fantastic if you stay below 85° though.

N570 really woke mine up but I could feel the throat burning with every shot lol, h1000 and 26 gave me similar results and Retumbo shot the largest groups of the bunch by a fair margin. Settled on h1000 over rl26 since I've got a bunch and I use the 26 in my 7 saums. Listen to your barrel. I find that if it like certain components it's usually fairly obvious

Would you mind sharing some data with ramshot magnum? I'm building a 300 prc now and just picked up this powder

It is exactly between H1000 and Retumbo. I took H1000 numbers and added them to Retumbo numbers and divided by 2 for a starting point of 75gr with a 215gr. I don't have anymore 215s or I'd still be shooting them in front of 78.8gr of ramshot.

SO START AROUND 75GR!

Again.....results may vary and work up slowly!!!!

If its above 85° I'm on the boat lol.

I've got a Christensen Ridgeline in the 300 PRC. I've been shooting the 212 eld-x for the last year or so trying to make them fly the best they can. I've used R-26, Imr-8133, Retumbo and H-1000. I've got about 300 rounds through it now and H-1000 is my winner. I've been able to get .5 groups with each powder but H1000 has shown me the largest nodes, most consistent groups, and lowest ES/SD. R-26 was speedy with 76.5 gr at 2995 but would shoot .5 one day and .8 the next. I had a rough time keeping it to group well at 300 plus yards. Retumbo was my second best and IMR - 8133 held its own too. For my gun, the choice would be H1000, Retumbo, IMR-8133 and then R-26 (In That Order). The **** gun has taken me way too long to find something the 212 likes. Wish I would have stocked up on some 200 gr accubonds before everything went to hell with supply issues lol.

My current load is;

77.25 gr.
H-1000
CCI-250
2X Lapua brass (turned)
Hornady 212 - eldx
Average velocity 2839
SD: 8.6
.020 off the lands
.003 neck tension with redding bushing die.
.327 MOA

My average SD numbers in H-1000 from 74 gr - 78.5 gr. were less than 18 at each charge weight. 50 rounds of that powder at all charge weights gave me an SD average of about 13. I had some larger spikes with Retumbo and the other powders. Hoping to get it out to 1000 this spring. Just about ready to put an AG Alpine Hunter on order for it. Good luck on your quest! Keep us posted on your progress.

I've had excellent luck with Retumbo. Haven't bothered trying other powders since it has performed so well for me and I have a fair amount of it. Shooting it from a 26" barrel and 225gr ELD-M.
