Perfect scope for a 338 Win mag

I have an old 80's Savage 111 Express 338wm with a 20" barrel. It sports an antique Leopold VX-ii 3-9x I bought in 1979. It has never failed me. It is one tough scope. It's taken multiple mule deer, elk, and moose. I try to keep my shots under 500 yds. It's a great combo for timber and brush especially in Griz country.

I recommended 2x for every 100 yards. Guys used to say 1x but imo 2x is better. Am doing a 33 Nosler for intermediate ranges with a 160 gr ttsx, so I plan to put a 3x15x44 on it, (<600 yards).

My eyes have aged equal the number of years I've been on this planet lol. I've moved over the years from one inch tubes to 30mm. Still have a few 1 inch tubes. I'm even looking at upgrading some 30mm tube 3x9 ish to 4x16, 5x20 ish.

I really like 34mm tubes when weight isn't a factor. I only have one 34mm tube scope.

Like I posted earlier in the thread, I'd like to upgrade the 3x9 on my 338 to larger. Just not sure what that's going to be. I guess I need to drink beer and cook ribs, then get online and buy a scope. That way I can get up the next day with a headache and see what kind of scope I bought lol!!!

am doing a 33 nos with a 22" barrel, for hunting in/for brown bear area(s).

I just bought a zeiss conquest V4 6-24-50 that was a "demo" for the money I could not pass this up, and I put it on my Ruger M77 338

Depending upon yardage you feel comfortable as max range, I'd think something with 12-18x on max mag would cover nearly anything you'd do. 3-4x on bottom end. I prefer ffp for wind holds without having to dial or worry about valve on the sfp optics. I went thru this just a year or so ago and ended up with ATACR 4-16x44

A .338 Win Mag is not a long range cartridge in my opinion! After buying my first .338 Win Mag, I put a Leupold VariX III 1.5x5 scope on it and felt I had the optimum elk rifle/scope combination!

That depends on your budget. For the best, your looking at $1500 - $3500 for Zeiss, Night Force, Swarovski. Prominent and reliable Leupold, Vortex, Bushnell Elite Tactical etc.
I just got a zeiss V4 for 949.00 in opinion hard to beat that price, and it will handle 338 wm no problem

What would you guys recommend as the perfect scope for a 338 Win mag used for elk hunting? Brand, power, etc?
Unless you establish specific parameters, you will receive a wide range of recommendations that may not precisely fit your needs. We all have different preferences, so if you can narrow it down, it will significantly help.

-- Hunting vs. shooting, and at what ranges?
-- Budget?
-- SFP vs FFP?
-- Illuminated vs. non-illuminated?
-- Reticle type/design?
-- 1" or 30MM tube, etc?
-- Weight restriction?

The above is just for starters for your consideration. Good luck!

I've had a 4.5-14×40 on mine for years, but now I kinda wish I had one that would go up to 18. Getting old I guess lol.
I have the Leupold 4.5-14 B&C on mine, and like you, I'm getting old, so I wish I had a higher magnification.
SWFA 3-15X42. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin.' All clicks are right on the money all the time and recoil and weather have no effect on performance. And the price is right for what you get.
I have a few of their offerings, and I agree, they offer a lot of scope for the money, and they are built like a tank.
