My experience with the Hornady 147 ELD-M on game. *A Lot of Shot Videos and photos*

Thanks for your reply Rich!!

And no crow to be eaten sir, from everything you had seen the bullet had performed great in all your guns and your customers that used them as well, you had no reason to doubt it!! And I would say, that in the majority of my experiences, it performed in an acceptable manner, but it was the two or three instances that really caught my attention.

I'm really suprised that it didn't expand at that distance, especially after hitting some bone it looks like!! Impact velocity had to still be pretty high. Again, thank you for sharing Rich.

You're welcome. It's more important to have all the facts and post them than to just want to be right. I still can barely believe what I saw but I am going back to the x.

I was going to use these bullets this year. I'm glad I stuck with the tried and true 140 eld-m/amax. I'm thinking it's something to do with the 147s thicker jacket and not a large hollow cavity behind the point like the 143 eld-x?

Actually as you see in this cut-away (not my photo) there is no hollow cavity behind the plastic tip, and the hollow cavity that the plastic tip fills is smaller than the 147's plastic filled cavity. I do however think that the jacket is a contributor. I also wonder if the match bullet has a different hardness of lead alloy?

I would be interested to see if the 140 ELDM is any different than the 147?? I would be a little surprised if it was. I too had great results with the Amax but I did with the 147 ELDM until last night too!

I'm thinking the jacket alloy may be different. The ELD-M might have a harder jacket. Ya know how the main difference between a Berger hunting bullet and a match bullet is the match bullet supposably a thicker jacket so the match bullet stays together better during long strings of fire in hotter barrels?

Also, if you look at the diagrams on the Hornady site, looks like the jacket at the tip of the ELD-M might be a bit thicker than the ELD-X. The ELD-X seems thinner in that area to promote expansion. Even looks that way a bit in the pic above.

We shot an 8 point buck last week. Center punch the shoulder and expanded very nicely. I tested the 140 on some woodchucks and it expands well. I also shot a bear this year with them and I've attached the entry and exit

I'm pretty sure Broz is using the 147 in his PRC. I believe he's had pretty good luck so far. He might want to see this thread. Don't think he's on here much anymore.

This a buck my son killed with a .308 168 eld-m. Very good expansion. It was right at 100 yards mv 2640. We have killed several javelina as well with good results out to 400 yds. I have killed a Coues at 650 yards with a 208 eld-m out of my 300 wby and an antelope at 110 yards both with lots of expansion and great performance. Surprised by the results posted here. I wonder if it has to do with the 147 or all.

Well, was standing in Sportsmans Warehouse this afternoon... Left the 147s on the shelf and got the 143s. Haven't tried either yet. Still shooting last of the AMaxes...
But did shoot two deer this year with cup/core bullets. One was with an 140 AMax at 40 yards. It was high shoulder and DRT. All I found was the base of the empty jacket deep in the off shoulder. Other was 100 yards with a 117 Sierra boat tail. Found the empty jacket in the offside shoulder after it took out two ribs, split the heart apart and broke the offside humerus.
Guess I'm trying to say that I would like to try the ELD-X and see how the interlock keeps things together. As long as it will shoot 600 yards, I'm ok.

So thanks for sharing the above. I was on the fence about it.
