Most common caliber

The only one that surprises me is number 9, the 7.62x39 and I guess it shouldn'y.

I would have thought it would be higher on the list due to the price of the ammo. But probably the most ammo for the 7.63 x 39 bought is the cheep surplus Chinese stuff, so domestic ammo sales will be of for this cartridge.

Id have to say the old 30.06. When you think about every time a manufacturer comes out with a new rifle to .06 is usually one of the first cartridges offered. Not to mention you can find 30.06 ammo in just about any country & you can find it in gas stations or other small convenience stores in just about any small town in North America

.308 caliber is by far the most popular. Nothing else even close. There are billions of firearms manufactured in this caliber all over the world such as Russian, Chinese, Brazilian, etc. manufacturers; AK-47s, M-1s, 303 British, etc. There are military and civilian warehouses stuffed with .308 caliber ammo.

What justme2 said. I didn't see or hear any talk of 3006 in Africa, but they had 2 308s and loads of ammo. Worldwide probably 308/7.62, AK and 223/5.56 in that order for centerfire. 22lr for any rifle. JOMO

So as a beginner in long range hunting and a small time preppier kind of guy, what do you think the most common cartridge in North America is? I know the 223/5.56 is the absolute most popular, but I think either a 300 win mag, or 30-06 Springfield would have to come in close seconds.

A bit late in the game, but since it has been revived six years later, I will play. Do not worry about what others think or what is the most common caliber (.22 or .30 cal) or chambering; (.223/5.56, .30-06, or .300 WM) pick one that is best for your "actual" intended purpose for "your" hunting/shooting environment.

There are a lot of people that need to google the difference between cartridge and caliber.

You are all to correct; many of these individuals also can't distinguish the difference between a clip and a magazine. I believe the author actually meant to discuss cartridges; caliber is too general of a term, such as a thirty caliber rifle which involve numerous cartridges. When I first read the post, I assumed the author actually meant cartridge and responded as such.

..out to a 1000. my choice is the 6-dasher, easy to shoot, reload and recoil is nnot bothersome when shooting lots of shots..hunting is another story, then either something in .284 or better yet .308 diameter would be my choice.
