First Long range rig....Detachable mag????

Im having a smith take a 7RM sendero and bed the stock and add a muzzle break as well as clean up the trigger. My question is whether or not to have him add a detachable mag to the bottom and do away with the hinged floor plate that comes standard on the sendero. I will be keeping the HS stock that comes on it, which my smith said he can modify easily to accomidate the bottom detachable magazine.
I will be using this as my main hunting rifle for mule deer and elk out west, and am unsure if there will be a negative with adding the detach mag. I would hate to pay the money to add it, and then regret it later. Any opinions would be great.
What are the pros and cons I should consider on the detachable magazine vs the standard hinged floorplate? Thanks

If your Sendero is a stainless one, I would be interested in taking the bottom metal, magazine spring, internal magazine body, and floorplate (whole factory setup) off your hands...

I could use it for my .280 AI build. I could use everything, but the floorplate, but those are cheap enough, and I could always use a spare magnum floorplate.

What is the OAL of your loaded ammunition & what is the internal maximum OAL allowed by the DBM?

Most long range chooters use uber long bullets like Booger or CEB or Matrix.... sometimes these missiles increase the OAL of the loaded cartridge long enough to make using a bottom metal (of most any brand) a serious PITA.

It can be done however, I ran a 338 RUM & 300SMK's thru a 3.600" AICS mag for quite a while before finally getting tired of waiting for the planets to align in a cosmic pattern of sorts enhancing the gravitational pull of the earth to alllow the SMK to remain seated that far into the powder column... Ok, so maybe not that difficult but....

Some bottom metals and/or magazines are designed for enhanced OAL which is worth its weight in unobtanium.

The 7RM case is short enough to be right on the border line for me. The 168's should work just fine, the 180's ok.... but, what happens 1200-1500 rounds from now when you have to chase the lands a bit & can't because of internal mag limits?

I don't know if you'll have that problem or not but, you've got some measuring to do- it's something to think about.

Its looking like it may be smarter to just leave well enough alone and keep the floorplate design. Maybe I should just that money I was gonna do the detachable magazine and add it to my optics budget.

Didn't mean to scare you off, just making sure you do your due dilligence before you take a leap of faith.

I recently completed a 300WM build running an AIAX setup. There is a TON of room for growth if necessary, YMMV.

Don't worry bud, since this is my first go round, I probably should use the KISS method. Besides like you said the more money the better when it come to optics.

I'm in the process of buying parts for my first custom LR rig. I went with just a hinged floorplate.....I had looked at DBMs, but for the price of the metal, and mags, for me, it wasn't worth it....
