Do it all Bullet for 30-06?

I'm a big fan of the 165 grain sst's.

I like the 165sst as well also the plain old 165 btsp is a good one but it ain't sexy to some folks. haha. I can get the 178 Amax into one hole with my 06 but I don't think its a do all bullet because of the close range problems that can happen I have heard the same about thee SST.

Just killed a 6x6 bull elk with the new 200 gr LRX at 150 yards from my Ruger scout rifle in .308 win. Velocity is at 2280 fps. The bull did not know what hit him, it took him off his feet and planted him! Shot was mid way up the shoulder with a complete pass through. If you do not have a 10 twist I'd go with the 175 LRX Barnes.

Accubond and Ballistic tips have the same bullet profile and BC. So I would pick a accubond for the hunting and you should be able to use the same weight ballistic tip in its place for practice at half the price.

I know you said no mono bullets but when you are talking light for caliber the Barnes TTSX is a viable option.
I started using them a long time ago because they were manufactured a couple of miles from my home but have ended up using them almost exclusively. Excellent results on mule deer, elk, moose, goat and antelope. From 50yds to 500yds. Have used them in 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, and 30 calibers.
The 150 and 168 TTSX would be just what you described except your aversion to monolithic.

I shot the sierra spbt for a while, basically the same, it ain't about sexy it's about wanting a certain performance on game I am eating. So far the barnes have the terminal performance that works and address my issue with the other bullet. Buying some boxes for hunting is nothing in the grand scheme of tags, gear, gas, etc. I know my settings to dial right back to the sierra spbt when just ringing steel.

Gotch ya on your fragmentation problem. I thought I was referring to wildernesses question about a do it all bullet. And I was basically saying the hornady interloc btsp is the same as the SST in construction without the tip so it might not be sexy to some. I don't know any thing about the barnes. When Ohio goes lead free, I will look into them. (maybe) I don't think the op is worried so much about the fragmentation a lot of us grew up spitting lead bird shot out of our squirrels and rabbits...

Recent studies with x-rays and CT scans on shot carcasses and processed meat have swayed me in conjunction with mono-bullet technology actually shooting well (in many scenarios). It's the microscopic fragmenting of the supersonic bullet deteriorating versus a piece of lead shot that spreads it around and gets actually eaten as opposed to spit out.

But the barnes do look sexy. :p

Thanks for the replies guys, has anyone used the Speer Deep Curl bullets? I hear they are discontinued now but I see a few boxes at one of the shops here. 300 bullets will last quite a while. The 165 Fusions are same basic bullet and a lil much for deer but had excellent penetration all exited, and would be good for elk Im sure.

The SSTs have been mentioned and like I said Ive used the 150s but not the 165s which I think would be much more likely to hold together and exit deer than the 150s, both at close range. The 150s do not seem to have a functional Interlock, not that I can see and it didnt work for me at least. I could definitely use a load using 165 ssts and matching Interbonds for the big yellow deer.

Anyone using Swift Sciroccos?

If I was one of those guys who shoots deer in the neck or shoulder then I might worry about bullet fragmentation and lead. But since I ONLY shoot for double lung shots I don't worry at all. I never eat the heart and lungs anyways. Deer always dead within 20 yards.

Imr 4064 works recall well for me and 165 gr SST and btsp

165 ballistic tip for deer/hogs and 165 Accubond for elk. Both will most likely shoot to the same point of impact or so close you will not need to worry.
