7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

Great thread....first post on this forum. I recently went in to a pawn shop near my work and ended up buying a pistol, and a Remington 7mm STW as well. Learning more about this rifle as I go, but seems this one has had a bit of triggerwork, probably sporterized, and a bi-pod mount added to the front. It also has a pretty exotic looking stock on it which looks really nice.

looking forward to getting out and putting a few rounds through it.
Get you a PhotoBucket account and post up some pics! We love gun pics.....Or as I'm sure most of us look at it as gun porn. :D

Yeah, I'll second that, we are a bunch of gun porn junkies:D welcome to the Brotherhood, but be careful, you might get addicted, and be a multi 7STW owner like a few of us here. I can honestly say I have never ran into any STW"s at any Pawn shops I've ever been to. Some junk .22's, and grandpas old shotguns. Nice pick up, and hope that it works out to be a shooter. Don't be afraid to ask if you run into problems , or if something dosen't seem right. This is a Badass caliber.

Anybody in my STW brotherhood got any help for me? I got 60-something views, but responses so far. I really could use some help, and I'd like to load some up tonight if anyone can help me out...

Also, I need to know what my rate of twist is my stock Sendero SF 7STW? I know that I should know this, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank... I know it should be around the 1:11-something range, but I got nothing...

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If your Sendero was made in '97 or '98 like mine were the twist rate of the barrel on your Sendero SF 7mm STW is 9 1/4.

It was made in the 02-03 time-frame. It was supposedly (according to Remington) the last Sendero SF 7mmSTW to ever leave the assembly line. They had already put a stop to production 2 weeks prior, but my former bossman knew someone up there, and told them how much it would mean to his "client" if they'd make one more. So they built 1 final rifle....And it appeared about 4 weeks later. Said the Remington guy told him they had to hand build it from scratch, but charged us standard price for it.

Don't know how true the story is, but it's easy to believe...b/c this thing came with the smoothest bolt, trigger, and shot 1-holers with factory ammo... I've never had a factory built gun (other than my AccuMark, which is a hand-built factory rifle) do that.

I don't know quite HOW true the story is, or how much was exaggerated by my bossman (I never known him to overexaggerate things), but that's what the word on the street was.

So, it's an 02-03 model....Don't know how much difference that makes.

Sorry for telling the whole story again....I just love how everything played out. It was like a miracle to me. I had wanted one just like it that we had in the store that had been sitting around for quite a while, but someone had bought it just before I had the money saved up... So Jay thought it would be a nice thing to do to order one for me. Which I thought was mighty nice of him. He always did treat me like I was one of his own kids...I'd still be workin for him 10 years now, if his business hadn't been bought out by a rich a-hole.

Hey Mud, as to your twist rate, I'm almost 100 % sure you have a 1 in 9 1/4 twist. That will stabilize the bullets you are wanting to shoot. Our resident heavy for caliber " Guru" and loyal STW nut, " Dano" might shine some light as to loading recommendations for the heavyweights. He has them down to a science. The heaviest I have fooled with are the 168's. That's really not heavy. But at least you know you have enough twist to accommodate the bigger bullets. Hang with it there Bro' she will come around.

Is a carbon wrapped barrel lighter? I watched the video, and it's hard to say.

Ed, yeah, they are significantly lighter, but there claim to fame is that they cool quicker. They have the same mass as a bull barrel, but are no heavier then a standard barrel. Actually, I think the core is smaller then a featherweight barrel. I don't think they really caught on. I don't hear that much about them.

SWEET! 9.25 twist works for me. Good to know I can stabilize the big boys. I bet the STW is gonna be one heavy hittin SOB with those 180's! They say they gave a 0.659 BC, which means they're gonna hit it like a caveman!

I bought a new thing my local store got in by Bullet Proof, called "12 Load Development Samples". It comes with 12 bullets of your choice for $10.00.

Seems kind of high, BUT who wants to buy a whole box for $55.00, then be stuck with 85-90 bullets you'll never use? So, I figured for $10.00 it'll be worth the try.

Those 180g VLDs are awesome bullets. I fell in love with them when I saw them.

My load is 79g of Retumbo and it shoots about 1/2 MOA at 100yds. One thing I did notice about this bullet in my rifle is that I does not like to be jumped. (At least in my rifle) I seat them almost to the lands, but just long enough that I can remove a loaded bullet with out having to pull my bolt. This means that this is a single shot proposition for my rifle.

I decided that I would develop a second "heavy for caliber" load using a 175g Sierra Gameking. This bullet is actually more accurate in my rifle shooting a 1 hole group about .304" with a 77g load of Retumbo seated to fit into my magazine. It's not as fast as the Berger load, but It's extremely accurate. I wanted to be able to shoot my rifle as a repeater in some situations.

Hopefully I'll have the chance this spring to shoot the Bergers at 1000yds and I'll report back when I do.

I'm really excited about Noslers annoucement of the 168g and 175g Long Range Accubonds. They have a listed BC of .652 and .672 respectively. The 6.72 is a higher BC than the Berger. Looks like a great bullet and can be seated to magazine length .

A 1-9.25 Twist should be able to shoot all bullets discussed, but it remains to be seen what your individual rifle will like.

As an alternative to Retumbo you can try:

(As per Quickload)

RL-25 with a Max load of 73g
or H1000 with a Max load of 76g

Hope this helps,

Dan

I have some H1000 handy, and tons of RL19 & RL22 on-hand...

I have sent Berger an email asking if the Alliant powders will work, and if so, what their recommendation is for a starting load.

So would you recommend starting @ 76.0 of H1000 or start lower?

I have been told you are the Isaac Newton of the heavy STW's, and that you have it down to a science. So, any help will be appreciated.
