300 Sherman Shortmag (SS)

It may be a while if there is. It depends on demand, and for some reason unbeknownst to me, it has been slow. The cartridge is extremely effective for the capacity, and has superb accuracy and great barrel life.

Gotcha. I am interested in my second barrel being either the 7 or the 300. I think the 300 may make more sense already having a 6.5 but I like the idea of correct headstamped brass for the 7SS.

Granted neither should have an issue taking down a bull.

Been a while but I did finish testing the 200 grain Sierra Matchking after switching to ADG brass. Once again RL 26 came out on top but only by a small margin and using a drop tube. Most of the other powders I used will run this bullet comfortable at 2980-3030 fps.

300 SS
ADG brass
Fed 210 GM
Cartridge BTO 2.207"
30 degree F 27.1

RL 23 max capacity, no pressure
62.4 grains

Hybrid 100V
60-61.5 in .5 grain 2856, 2931, 2926, 2941
62.5-64 in .5 grain 3030, 3045, 3069, 3108
62.5-63 grains seemed to be a good area to stop and have a good load with safe pressure

RL 26 near max capacity with drop tube, low pressure
67 grains 3028 fps
67.5 grains 3084, 3083, 3082 fps around .4" group

N560
66-68.5 grain in .5 grain 2910, 2942, 2966, 2995, 3051, 3067
the last 2 shots went into the same hole but really high pressure and max capacity
Low pressure and possible node around the 2950 fps mark

RL 16
62, 62.5 grains 3044 and 3075 fps respectively
I overestimated where to start with this powder as it is slightly faster burn than 100V both loads were on the high end for pressure. 60.5-61 grains would be good for pressure and still decent speed.

IMR 4451
60.5, 61 grain 2949 and 2991 fps respectively
getting towards top end but could probably load .5 more easily and be good.

With most powders being around the 3000 fps mark this bullet is still a good option for target shooting as it has a huge bc of .715 G1

More on the 180 Berger Elite Hunter to come...

I was getting all into the .338 SS yesterday, reading through its info.
My smith wants me to order a 6mm barrel and a .308 barrel. He says he can teach me how to do the barrel switch easy enough cause the action is a Savage.
I think the .300SS is going to suit my needs for an elk/mule deer rifle just fine.
Bu the time I'm done with this I could very well own a barrel in every offering.
A short action and a long action are already on their way to the smith along with lugs and nuts

The 338 ss is a sweet rig too and I want one but it will be years out. I also want a 6sst. You'd think I'm gun poor lol the 300 is my favorite rifle I have to this point with the big boomer 338 edge a close second. It seems like the 300ss is best suited for the 208 and 200 grain bullets. I've had extremely great results with the 208 for years.

I've been wrestling back and forth on which to build, a 338ss or a 300ss. It seems like the 338 is getting a lot more attention.

It always has for some reason. Every year I post my animals that I harvest with the 300 people get interested then they forget. It is a sweet round! I dont understand why I have the only one. Depending on your purpose the 338 is going to recoil more unless you put a good brake on it and as you stated in your thread bullets cost more.

I really love the 215 Berger hybrid. Has that bullet not worked best for you in this chambering?

It shoot amazing but I dont like the taste of the Berger cool aid for hunting, prices, or supply. If rich does another reamer for the 300 he will shorten the throat so the 215 is under the magic 3" number. I think to the lands with the current reamer I am 3.034". If they like a jump of .050 or more it wouldnt matter.

Back home and able to look at my book again. I also revisited the 180 Berger elite hunter a while ago to see how fast I could stoke that up since the bc is higher than the other bergers up to and including the 190 grain vld for a hunting bullet.

300 SS
ADG brass
Fed 210 GM
Cartridge BTO 2.197" COAL 2.920"
36 degree F 27.1

RL 26
68 grains basically max capacity (with drop tube) pressure good
3110, 3102, 3106 .4" group

Hybrid 100V
over estimated again on starting load to much pressure
64 and 64.5 grains 3166 and 3206 fps
probably run good pressure around 3110 fps

N560
Maxed out capacity and pressure was starting to show.
67.5, 68, 68.5 3020, 3072, 3095

RL 16
pressure getting high at max charge, would not run this load
61.5, 62, 62.5 3098, 3122, 3155
this would run comfortable at 3100 fps.

Not to shabby for a 180 grain bullet and low 60's for powder charges with most of the powders that suit this size.

I bet the 200 grain Accubonds would be Elk big medicine out of the 300SS.

So what are you doing for brass? Assuming you get 7ss brass and neck up? Also, what size bolt will I need?
