270-300 Win Mag now feasible

I didn't have an opportunity to stretch her out but my 270-300WM did produce bang-flops on the doe at 272 yards and the buck at 318.

Cogburn- that is a nice heavy buck. Where are you hunting and what are your seasons and limits?

I think the added speed and hydroshock of the 270-300 makes it extremeley deadly. The 270 was already known formhigher lethality than one would expect from a similar cartridge. Now it is a magnum form.

No science behind my statement- keep the hatemail, no need to send it - oh wait, I'm not on that forum!

These deer came from Spink County South Dakota, the season dates were Nov.19-Dec.4. I drew an any deer tag and a 3rd drawing antlerless tag.

Both the deer were found in the position they are pictured in except for the bucks head was propped up. Bullet placement on both was a few inches below the spine and just behind the shoulder. 150g Trophy Bonded Tip@3320fps.

What a great buck and what a cool cartridge! I have thought long and hard about doing something along those lines like a 270-300 win, 270 STW, 270 RUM, etc. What barrel length are you using? 3,400 + in a 140 grain sounds awesome! Love a speed demon rounds like that...I do anyway. And that combo of velocity with a solid bullet kills like lightning I bet.

Not trying to steal the show here, but speaking of the "270 RUM", I got my first whitetail yesterday with my 270 Allen Magnum, which is basically just that, with a slightly improved shoulder.

This 100lb, 3/4 grown doe stepped out at 260yds. With a slight quartering angle, the 170gn Berger hit her right behind the front right shoulder and exited mid-way ribcage on the left side. The bullet was still traveling approx. 3023fps with 3450ft lbs of energy (muzzle velocity is 3445fps).

Bang, flop. The extrance wound looked like a simple, caliber sized hole and when I rolled her over lungs and blood poured out the exit hole like a spigot. Upon examination during dressing both sides of the ribs had golf ball size holes! Not much of a stress test but this is one BA round!

SIDE NOTE: Kirby Allen built this rifle over ten years ago for a friend of mine who lost interest in LR shooting shortly after ordering it. He and I did some "horse trading" a few months back and all I can say is "what a rifle". Mr Allen flat out knows his stuff and can build a rifle. Many thanks to him and royinidaho for all their knowledge in helping me. JohnnyK.

BJD,
What is your coal with the 170 Berger?

I have had horrible issues with the 170s

I couldnt find a happy spot to save my sanity! A few of the other gents in this post shoot them. Beautifully out of 270 weaherbys. The weTherby has a ton of free bore and they are literally jumping .3-.4 inches. I have not tried this extreme a position. Because hunting season was upon me and those Cutting Edge bullets shot so well and performed beautifully.

I did try jumps from .01-.03 and could not find a group in my rifle that wasnt pschizo.

Johnny k. Kirby allen makes an awesome rig, no doubt. I have leRned a lot from his and roys posts. Especially the old stuff! Everytime we get a good idea- i look it up here and learn 50 people already did it!

Have you tried the Nosler LRABs in that cannon?

You may get 3600 and the bc is a 625. It being an accubond, it may hold together!!

What a load that would be!

BJD,
I did some initial fireforming with the 140gn Ballistic Tips and they were leaving @ 3650fps. Even during fireforming 15 shots produced a tight, nickle size group at 100yds. I was using H50BMG powder and lighting off 102gns. This "KirbyBuilt" is tight and as good as you could ask for using a trued & blue printed Remington action. After the NBT's ran out I just started using Cream of Wheat to FF. Figured barrel wouldn't last long with the Ballistic Tip method.

In reference to the LRAB's, no I haven't. Kirby said the regular AB would do fine but that the LRAB would probably be too soft for this barrel. It's one of the first rifles he built and was using Lilja, 1-8 twist, 3 groove barrels at the time.

He recommended Ballistic Tips, AB's and any of the Barnes bullets. I've got 200 of the Wildcat 169.5gn RBBT ULD's and 200 170gn Bergers. The rifle likes the Bergers but I have to work on the seating depth for the WC's. I got "lucky" with the Bergers, after I made a modified case I snugged the Berger up to the LaG's and backed it off .010" and they shot lights out, so, of course I left it at that.

Once you step up to a rifle of this "caliber" (pun intended) you quickly learn that the bullet is the only limiting factor for LR. Wish someone made a 180, 195 or even 200gn .277" bullet. I just saw where Hornady is coming out with a .277" 145gn ELD-X, G1 BC is .536, don't imagine that will do the Allen Magnum justice though.

If you can find the 150 interbonds @.525 they would hold up. I have not found a load that would work for me in a 270win. They group at about 2650 and just grow in my rifle. My dad has a model 70 with a shorter barrel and they are getting better as he gets to pressure. They are still not close to the 140 bt's and accubonds 3000-3100fps we get better than 1/2 moa too. Maybe your speed can get to a node we just cannot get close too. Most shops out east have a bunch of them because most 270wins seem to have the same opinion our rifles have. Change to the sst's in 150's and they shoot very good so Idk

For a 270 win, 140 grs with 60 grs of h4831 was magic. 3000 fps in a 22" barrell, 3200 in a 26". I used that for deer, bears, elk, coyotes, mag pies, rabbits- etc etc.

Interbond 140s was what i started with, then graduated to the 140 BT

When the second barrel on that rifle was shot out, i rechambered it to a 25" 270 Ackley improved. That is when the fun started. 150s to 3200 in a 25" barrel. 130s ro 3350.

I loaned the 270-300 to a friend for his first deer.
