270-300 Win Mag now feasible

As a side bar...after my buddy got his ram...I did some shooting at 1100 feet above sea level ( I live a 5000ft)

My 1-9 barrel is pushing the 170 Bergers @ 3225fps, the drops were spot on at 595 yards and at 925yrds...just some extra info...

My setup is a little different than BJD but same cartridge 270-300WM. I am shooting a 26" Pac-Nor super match grade 1:10 twist and run about 100 fps slower than BJD. Mine really likes 130 grain Peregrine PlainsMasters at 3400 fps.

You should be able to get more speed from your 130gr bullet...my 28", 1-9 barrel, did this, in this thread (I know that it is long thread....thanks Big Jake...:)) with H-1000 and zero pressure signs...

The 130grs, that I was shooting were close to 3700fps...

140gr SST @ 3630fps...three shot group...shooting as I always shoot...bipod with a rear bag...

I can push it up in the 3500s but the accuracy isn't as good. The 3400 load is with 78.5 grains of Retumbo. Also mine really likes VV N570.

Longtooth- what load is your 140? I may be using the wrong powder!!!

It was H1000. I'll check the amount when I get home. Hodgdon says that I (270 Wby) can put anywhere from 75 to 80 grs in the case (and my case is smaller than yours). I do not think that I went too far past 77grs of H1000...I thought that it may of been too hot..

With that round (140 SST), I just eyeballed where I thought that the ending bearing surface (of the bullet) would meet up with the starting of the case neck.

The only bullet that comes close to touching the lands with my Weatherby freebore is the 165 Matrix and I run that @.02" off....

Longtooth32

you must have an exceptionally fast barrel. Those speeds are amazing.

Just looked at my notes...It looks like the only fast thing I have is my brain...

That three shot group (140 SST) was an ave of 3573 fps pushed by 79 grs of H1000. Got to 3610fps with 80 grs of H1000.

I was remembering my 130 SST speeds...those did average 3657 fps (accuracy node) with a near max load of H1000 at 3712 fps...

All speed measured with a Magnetospeed...

Thanks- I'll take a look at those powders in the 270-300 with the 140gr.

I was using imr 4350 because I had 8 lbs and it was accurate

I only have 3 lbs left so time to look at other powders!

Thanks again

Does anyone know how or if we can post video here? I have my shot video from Mexico it is pretty cool.

Find a way to post your video...that is a nice buck...

Try H1000 on the lighter bullets and try RL26 for the 165 to 170 range...you may get those 170s to fly...yet...

I've been looking at data and IMR4451 may be worth a few shots...

I did shoot a doe at 272 yards with mine, bang flop. 77g Retumbo ,a Trophy Bonded Tip 150g at 3320fps. I will probably shoot another this weekend.

Maybe Santa will bring me a magnetospeed for Christmas!!
