Hello fellows from WV
I am new to posting on this site, but have been reading and following for quite a while!! (Learning!)
I have recently been interested in long range shooting / hunting. I was reading about the new Nosler 26 release and went directly to the Nosler's site and indeed the Patriot is available in 26" barrel with a 1in8 twist.
I have not shot long range (1000 yard ) until recently when I accompanied a long time hunting partner's son ( who is really into long range competitive shooting) to our close by long range shooting facility ( White Horse Range ) about twenty miles from Clarksburg WV and we shot his custom H&S 6.5 Creedmore at 10" steels @ 1000 yards and boy what fun we had!! We had a bit of swirling winds that day so I am LEARNING (slowly) to read this phenomenon, but was still able to make some pretty acceptable hits. Now I'm hooked!!
I'm definitely going to make a build, I was headed pretty strong toward a 6.5x284 on a Savage action for occasional long range target shooting for fun but more toward hunting. I am now very seriously considering the Nosler 26 Patriot.
I am a long time reloader(40years) on many different calibers from 204 to 458. My favorite hunting rifle being a Ruger 77 in 300 Win Mag. I just recently (last Year) got into some Weatherby rifles (257 and 338-378 Accumark). I would really value your opinion on my choice of build either the 6.5x284 or this new Nosler 26! I am a retired automotive machine shop owner who has finally got some time to enjoy my love of shooting and hunting. I guess that old "gear head" in me just likes to build things but now I have diverted my skills to working on guns for family and friends!

Welcome TS. The two calibers are completely different animals

If you want to do a lot of shooting the 26 has a major drawback which is going to be barrel life. It is a true hot rod and if you shoot it a lot it's going to burn out fast and young.

As a hunting caliber though the several hundred extra FPS it offers over the other 6.5's including the 6.5-284 will come in very handy.

I've got one on order from Nosler which will be a light carry rifle and I'm building another on a Model 70 action that will be a heavy dedicated LR Rig for me.

There's definitely a place for both of these calibers but since I already have a .260 and a .264wm I don't need the 6.5-284.

any of you 6.5 shooters ever use the Rem Accutip bullets ? any results too share ?

140 gr and bc of .520 , same bc as a Hornady 140 gr SST

thinking of ordering some while they are on sale at Natchez

$19.99 per box ain't too bad and cheaper than Midway

Remington AccuTip Bullets 264 Cal 6.5mm (264 Diameter) 140 Grain Boat
They are the same bullets Remington OEM's the SSTs from Hornady and rebrands them AccuTips. I haven't used thm in 6.5 preferring the Berger 140's. I have used them in my 270WSM in 140 and 150 gr. wth good success on er sized game out to 600 yards.

Gunner 75, have you been doing anymore load development? I am following this as the snow is going here in Prince George, I am waiting delivery of the 26 and the bears are starting to rouse. Its all slowly coming together.

I would try R-33 if you can find some. My 6.5-300wm shoots 140's 3230fps with Retumbo and 3290fps with R-33 in RWS brass. In Nosler brass it will go about 50-60fps faster. I'm using powder charges in the 70-75gr range through a 28" barrel. My 26" barrel gun will shoot 123's 3380fps with Retumbo in RWS brass.

Must have taken a little longer than expected. I see Midway has pushed back their "expected" date from 4-13 to 4-30.

I think they do that just to test my patients:rolleyes:

Are these 26 Nosler cases coming of the line in Oregon (sorting) or in Sweden where they are being drawn and headstamped? If they are still in Sweden then it may be awhile before anyone is handloading them. So much for this hunting season.

Well, I just picked up my 3rd Nosler Patriot... this one is chambered in 26 Nosler.
Loaded up a few test loads, some of with Retumbo, and RL 50.
Retumbo was wild, throwing every other shot. As soon as I fired RL50 it immediately focused the group. I settled on 88 grains that, 130 accubond, wlrm, Norma USA brass... @3.330.
Didn't chronograph it yet, but she was .330 in spread average at 100 yards .
I ended up using the optics I had set aside for the AI I have being built... But a **** fine investment ....

It's a mid-load in Nosler's load data that was just published.... however, it was showing signs of coming up on pressure, with that and accuracy.... I ceased pushing any harder. Not all the time can you have the fabled speeds and accuracy together. Even if its actual velocity is 3250-3300... Doesn't matter to me. She's just broken in and shooting SOLID.

I just read through 34 pages of posts on this 26 Nosler and I couldn't find it anywhere... did anyone else get more than 400 shots through their rifles before the barrels were burned out?

Thanks!
